100 Years of Beauty: Philippines
The sixth installment in the Cut.com’s “100 Years of Beauty” series is here, and this time around the video focuses on the Philippines beauty looks through the decades. With background research conducted by Chris Santo Domingo Chan, a PhD student in anthropology at the University of Washington, this video begins with the Spanish-American War and an indigenous look that includes tribal tattoos in 1910.

As the video progresses, we see the influence of Spanish and American trends on Filipino beauty throughout the 1900s. The American jazz age has a strong influence on the beauty trends in the 1930s, while Mestiza (half-Filipina, half-Caucasian) actresses set the beauty standards during the golden age of Philippines film in the 1950s, and Imelda Marcos (and her spectacular shoe collection) made waves in style and beauty during the 1960s. Going into the 2000s, Korean pop and the culture of the United States has a strong influence over the hair and makeup styles.

April Villanueva, a former Filipino pop star, is the model for the new video, with makeup by Katya Gudaeva and hair by Juel Bergholm.
