From subtle to bold, black eyeliner is a fall staple—but staple needn’t mean simple. Robin Black, professional makeup artist and creator of the acclaimed blog Beauty Is Boring, created four very different looks using black liner (and that other fall essential: oxblood lipstick) for her debut column on Yahoo Beauty. Stay tuned for more of Black’s editorial perspective, how tos, and mesmerizing makeup GIFs.
#1 The Tightline
Simple and chic, this look works for day or night. Using a liquid or gel liner, keep close to your lashline and extend just past the edge of your eye. Don’t forget to dot the liner in between your lashes to create denser looking lashes.
Clarins 3-Dot Liner ($26)
#2 The Cat Eye
A classic that still feels modern, the cat eye never goes out of style. Tilt the outer edges upward to give a “lift” to your features.
MAC Fluidline Gel Liner ($16) in BlackTrack
#3 The Diva
This bold version of the traditional cat eye is not for the reticent. Start by applying a translucent eyelid primer; let it sit for several minutes before drawing on your favorite cat eye. Fill in your entire eyelid with liner, connecting the edges to your usual cat eye shape.
L’Oreal’s Magic Eyelid Primer ($8)
#4 The Runway
Inspired by graphic liner looks from NYFW, this style is fashion forward and eye-catching. Simply draw a small rectangle (or square, depending on your eye shape) in the outer half of your upper lid with an easy to use liner. Leave the rest of your eyelid nude, or cover with a transparent primer.
All of the looks are paired with NARS Audacious Lipstick ($32) in Charlotte.
Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner ($16)
Maybelline New York Eye Studio Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner ($7)
Bare Minerals Brightening Primer ($18)
Wet & Wild Mega Last Lipstick ($3) in Cherry Bomb
