Girl With Cancer, 8, Re-creates Cara Delevingne’s Bald Met Gala Look

An 8-year-old found strength and inspiration in one of the world’s most famous supermodels.

Brooklyn Hutchinson of Peterlee, England, is in her second round of battling Wilms’ tumor, a form of cancer that attacks the kidneys. Since her diagnosis in August 2015, the cancer has forced her to have her kidneys and sections of her lungs removed. Now chemotherapy has caused her hair to fall out. But Brooklyn isn’t letting her illness — or her lost locks — deter her from making a fashion statement.

The Instagram account @brooklynisourhero recently shared a photo of Brooklyn decked in full regalia as Cara Delevingne at the Met Gala.

“Brooklyn’s first professional makeover!!” read the caption. “Inspired by @caradelevingne If you can’t have hair, have glitter and diamonds.” The look perfectly re-created Delevingne’s high-fashion red carpet “hair.” Brooklyn’s look consisted of a painted metallic scalp patterned with stars, shimmering silver eyeliner, bold lashes, Delevingne’s trademark thick brows, and a photo-shoot-ready Blue Steel expression.

Holly Leighton, 18, also got a makeover alongside her BFF Brooklyn. She tells Yahoo Beauty that the look came together thanks to a charity auction she was helping to put together in Brooklyn’s honor. “Fiona Coombes, the makeup artist, she offered us a free makeover as well as a voucher each to get taught makeup. When we met Fiona, I had told her about Brooklyn’s obsession with makeup, and Fiona had asked if she’d like glitter,” Leighton tells Yahoo Beauty. “After the OK, Coombes decided to style Brooklyn after Delevingne’s standout look. The message we want out there is to be positive just like Brooklyn.”

This isn’t the first time Brooklyn has been lauded. Early this year, she received a Child of Courage Award for her bravery throughout her illness. She even managed to make it to the award ceremony just five days after having major surgery. “I am so proud of her,” mom Joanne Hutchinson told the Hartlepool Mail at the time. “She just gets everybody through it with her positivity.”

With that type of attitude, it’s no surprise that Brooklyn took inspiration from Delevingne’s boundary-crossing look. Delevingne originally shaved her head for a role in the upcoming Life in a Year. Despite the fact that it she had to do it for work, the cut was important to her, and Delevingne took to Instagram to explain why.

“Its exhausting to be told what beauty should look like,” she wrote (and as a supermodel, she should know.) “I am tired of society defining beauty for us. Strip away the clothes, wipe Off the makeup, cut off the hair. Remove all the material possessions. Who are we? How are we defining beauty? What do we see as beautiful?”

Brooklyn took her words — not to mention those shimmering stars she wore at the Met Gala — to heart. With her silver head, it was clearly that Delevingne was proud of her baldness. What started off as just another chic beauty look for an international model turned into an inspirational and fun day for Brooklyn. Brooklyn’s makeover even caught the attention of Delevingne herself, who shared photos of Brooklyn on her own Instagram with the caption “Brooklyn MY HERO! #brooklynourhero #whoneedshair.”
