How to Get Glittery Lips Like the Models at Atelier Versace’s Paris Couture Show
The models stunned in satin detailing at Atelier Versace’s Fall/Winter 2016 Couture Show in Paris. But amid the sophisticated designs, we couldn’t help but notice the luxe lips on the likes of Taylor Hill and Bella Hadid. The duo were among models sporting glittery pouts on the runway. The wine-colored lip look was so chic, Bella even rocked it post-show with some street-style edge.

While gorgeous when done well, glitter can be tricky. Without a little guidance, you may wind up looking like you’re wearing a costume. That said, celebrity makeup artist Noel Nichols says glittery makeup has “a special place” in her heart and cosmetic arsenal. “Especially lips lately, which we’ve been seeing more and more on social media,” she tells Yahoo Beauty.
To get the look models rocked on the Atelier Versace runway, start with a soft canvas. “Use a scrub, such as Fresh Sugar Lip Polish ($24), to exfoliate any dry skin before adding color,” says Nichols. “Since glitter can be a bit drying, always follow your scrub with a light balm. I love Rosebud Salve ($6) to prep lips for a lasting look.” From there, you can decide on a subtle or dramatic shimmer.

To score the vampy version
First, Nichols uses concealer “very lightly around the lip line to neutralize redness,” which you can then set with translucent powder. “Next, line the lips with a deep burgundy red pencil such as MAC Lip Pencil in Nightmoth ($16.50),” she suggests. “Fill the lips in with an oxblood-red cream lipstick like NARS Audacious Lipstick in Charlotte ($32).” Avoid formulas that are too matte, as the glitter needs a little tackiness to stick.
Once your lip color is in place, Nichols says to dip a tightly-packed bristle brush like MAC Brush No. 248 ($25) into glitter like MAC Glitter in Reflects Blackened Red ($22). “Beginning from the middle of your bottom lip, press the glitter in gently,” she explains. “For full Versace glamour, fill in the entire lip down to the lip line. For a more mellow version of that look, just concentrate the glitter in the center of your bottom lip. It will naturally migrate on to the rest of your lips.” Brush away stray glitter particles from your face with a clean makeup brush.

To nab a softer vibe
You can create the same effect, just subtler, by changing up your colors — especially to a golden summer glow. “Gold glitter, softly washed onto a peachy lip, is a lovely effect for a night out,” Nichols says. Try Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Color in Peche ($28) or Lancome Rouge in Love in ‘Jolis Matin’ ($29), followed by a dot of Make Up For Ever Diamond Powder in Gold ($25). “To keep this look pretty and not too overdone, leave the rest of your face fresh and glowing, with groomed brows and a simple eye. Just apply a couple of coats of black mascara.”
If you are truly sparkle-shy and don’t want to apply extra glitter, but you like the look of a shimmery lip, Nichols says to opt for a metallic lipstick, like Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick ($20), Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21), Kylie Cosmetics Metals ($18), and Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick ($37). “Deeper tones such as red, copper, burgundy, oxblood, berry, and deep orange-red look best and most sophisticated in a metallic finish,” Nichols explains. If you want an even lighter touch yet, go for a glittery gloss that doesn’t feel too preteen-like. Nichols likes Buxom Full-On Lip Polish ($20) and MAC Lustreglass Lip Gloss ($15).
Go forth and shine on!
