How to Hide a Blemish

It happens to all of us. Out of nowhere. Whether you call it a pimple, a zit, or a blemish, it sometimes just shows up — and it’s not pretty

If you seem to always have skin issues, I recommend a three-step approach. First, focus on your diet. It’s often as simple as giving up white flour, dairy, or even just fried foods. Second, switch up your skin care routine. The products you are using might be making you break out. Finally, find a good dermatologist who can tackle bigger skin issues and understands how lifestyle and diet play a role in skin health.

In the meantime, this is how you can seamlessly conceal any spots:

  • Never squeeze a blemish and then expect to be able to cover it. The inflammation and extra redness make it almost impossible.

  • Choose a skin-tone-correct cover-up stick. The formula should be solid, not liquid, because it offers the best coverage. You can also use a foundation stick, a concealer pencil, or a creamy solid pot. Concealer for under eye circles is too light and will actually make a blemish stand out.

  • Look for a cover-up stick that is the exact same shade as your skin. Test it out on the side of your face — if it blends in completely, then it is the right shade. Sounds simple, but finding the exact skin match product, along with a similar powder, is key.

  • If you have superdry skin, use a bit of lightweight moisturizer, especially if the spot is flaky or dry, which sometimes happens if you are using over-the-counter medicine to get rid of the spot. Use a brush to apply concealer to really target the spot, and avoid applying thick cover-up to a larger area. Dab the product directly on the spot. Gently pat it in. Layer a second coat if needed. Blend with your fingers.

  • For skin that is oily, choose an oil-free moisturizer and spot corrector.

  • To set, dust on a light amount of skin tone powder that matches your skin. This will help the concealer last longer.

  • For stubborn spots, you might have to apply a bit more concealer on top of the powder, directly onto the spot.
