How To: Rock a Burgundy Eye

Don’t let the words “burgundy eyeshadow” intimidate you. The deep red shade doesn’t have to be scary—it’s actually a cool and easy way to update a smoky eye. The look has made quite a few runway appearances over the years, from wine hued lids by Charlotte Tilbury at Donna Karan’s fall 2012 show to Pat McGrath’s shimmery creation at the fall 2013 Gucci show—and with marsala being named the Pantone color of the year we have a feeling we will be seeing even more of the hue on lids.

If you’re ready to try burgundy shadow, start by applying a corrector concealer around and on your lid to mask any natural red or purple tones in the eye area. Next comes the most important step: selecting the shadow. New York-based makeup artist Lisa Aharon says you should go for a sheer, cream shadow with a little shine if you are applying the color on your top lid. “The wrong shade in the wrong place can make eyes look tried,” she says. If you’re going to go all out with a smoky eye, she recommends choosing a shade that has more purple or brown tones. To finish off the look and keep eyes defined, go for a few swipes of your favorite mascara on top and bottom lashes or line eyes with a dark brown pencil. “Burgundy shadow compliments green eyes the most, but it’s a color that looks great on all skin tones,” says Aharon.
