There’s a new way to wear your sunscreen, and it doesn’t involve messy application. Mott 50, a label that aims to deliver a new perspective on sun safety, has introduced a revolutionary approach to sun protection that doesn’t involve a tube.  Instead, the label offers a selection of swimwear and ready-to-wear that offers protection from the sun. So how does it work? Sunscreen is (somewhat miraculously), embedded into the actual fabric used to create swimsuits, rash guards, t-shirts, cover ups, dresses, pants, skirts, and hats.

Founded by two fashion editors, Monique Hypes and Anne Reilly, who share a love for sunshine and fashion and conceived the idea for their brand whilst on a beach in the Hamptons. Their design aim to is to make skin safety a fashionable priority. Each garment, be it a one piece or a skirt, contains a certification of 50 UPF (ultraviolet protection factor), and is ideal for water sports, a day by the pool, or simply any day spent outside.

The innovative and incredible fabric is unique to the label, and whether you simply forget to apply sunscreen (because don’t we all), or need some extra protection, Mott 50 aims to provide it. “We saw a big niche in the market, and wanted to create something that prevented skin cancer and looked good,” explained the designers.  The label is also close their hearts, as Reilly’s family has a history of skin cancer. “It was important to me — to us — to help bring awareness and prevent this disease,” she explains. Plus, the fabric is exceptionally soft and cozy. “We worked really hard to make everything comfortable, and it’s actually a huge factor for us. Everything is made from a rayon spandex fabric that originates from bamboo, which creates a soft hand feel and is spun to create a higher UPF level than average clothing.”

The brand also recently introduced a kids wear line, including t-shirts and cover ups in colorful stripes and surfboard graphics, offering both practical clothing and a message for new generations. In addition, the label participates in awareness and fundraising initiatives alongside the Melanoma Research Alliance throughout the year. As May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, they will partner with the MRA for Sun Hat Saturday, donating 40% of proceeds from hat sales over Memorial Day Weekend to the MRA.
