NYFW Tip Alert: How to Create Sexy, Wet-Look Lashes
Mascara has been taking risks lately, from colorful shades to punk rock clumps, but now wet lashes may become the new trend. Why? As Maybelline global makeup artist Yadim explained backstage at Jason Wu, “it’s a simple, easy, beautiful look but there’s a little something to it.”
Jason Wu is known for his classic, sophisticated styles, but he wanted a modern edge for the makeup this season. “My initial thought was to do something with a crazy mascara or something, and I thought he would be a little afraid of it, but in the end when I brought the girls out he loved this — he’s obsessed with it,” said Yadim.

To get the look, he first used Maybelline Volum’Express Colossal Chaotic Effect Mascara ($5) to clump up the ends of the lashes. “We don’t go to the root of the lash — Just swish it back and forth using the tip of the mascara wand,” he says. “It kind of bunches the lashes together.” Next came the added wet effect. “We put lip gloss onto the end of the lashes so it almost ends up looking like vinyl-y lashes, like drippy shiny — to a fault.” Makeup artists used a long thin brush or makeup wand to apply Maybelline’s new Colorama gloss (it’s not out yet!) to the tips of lashes right before showtime.

If this sounds a little goopy off the runway, fear not. “If you don’t want any wetness on your lashes at all but want to keep it looking semi-wet, there are some Maybelline mascaras that are purposely more shiny than others,” says Yadim, who suggests Great Lash ($4) Volum’Express Falsies Push Up Drama ($7) and Lash Sensational Lucious Mascara ($7) all in Blackest Black for a wet look. And the more clumps the better — “when you get out of the shower and look in the mirror they’re a little clumped together.” You can also try coating lashes with a lip balm, Vaseline, or a natural clear gloss to get the look at home.
