Stephen Colbert Gives Darth Vader a Makeover with CoverGirl [Video]

Stephen Colbert is known for taking jabs at politicians, but last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the talk show host not only gave CoverGirl’s limited-edition Star Wars collection a spot in the hot seat, but also gave Darth Vader a beauty makeover with the cosmetics line. “As a diehard fan, I’ve made a solemn pledge to buy and use any product to have a Star Wars tie-in,” he said, introducing his actual Luke Skywalker bathroom set from 1977, which comes with shampoo, bubble bath, a comb, and a bar of soap — or as Colbert calls it, “Luke himself trapped inside a bar of soap, foreshadowing Han Solo being trapped in carbonite.” So, when Colbert saw one of the commercials for the CoverGirl collection, featuring Janelle Monáe asking “Which Side Are You On?” he actually thought it was a trailer for the upcoming film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“The forced marketing integration is strong with this one,” he said. “This is the perfect makeup collection for girls who like Star Wars but not enough to realize that this has nothing to do with Star Wars.” Monae actually told Yahoo Beauty in October 2015 that she considers herself one of the biggest Star Wars fans, and that George Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson are mentors of hers. CoverGirl’s global creative design director, Pat McGrath, who created the collection and chose the colors, is also a self-proclaimed Star Wars fan. “I love everything about Star Wars,” McGrath told Yahoo Beauty in October. “Waiting for each film, listening to the rumor mill, the costumes, the makeup, everything. It’s just inspiring.” The collection consists of three “Light Side” looks and three “Dark Side” looks to choose from. “They were previously available in containers that didn’t say Star Wars,” Colbert deadpanned, noting that McGrath’s chosen colors included dark purple, gold, silver, lilac, and red. “And for you non-Star Wars fans out there, those are all colors that exist in the Star Wars universe,” he said while the audience snickered.

“Now as a fan, I’ve collected all of the CoverGirl makeup line,” Colbert announced, displaying a full basket containing the entire makeup collection. “It’s got everything, even the much maligned Phantom Mascara and Jar Jar blush. I’m a grown up, I would never wear this makeup. But Darth Vader would.” Colbert then put on his Darth Vader helmet — of course he’d own one — and drew some lipstick around his air-intake holes. “Am I pretty now, daddy?” he asked while wearing the helmet, mimicking Vader’s heavy breathing. While the Star Wars franchise is full of iconic makeup looks (ahem, Natalie Portman’s Queen Amidala!), this is likely the first and only time that Darth Vader has worn lipstick.
