This Really Works: Shampoo to Brighten Up Your Blonde

It’s no secret that summer can take a toll on your hair. And the impacts of summer sun, salt, and chlorine tend to be even more harsh when it comes to color treated hair. I was lucky to snag an appointment with Redken celeb colorist Tracey Cunningham at the beginning of the summer (where she wove perfect Lily Aldridge highlights through my medium-dark brunette hair) and ever since, I’ve been taking extra good care of my locks — at least that is what I thought. Last week I looked in the mirror and realized my once pale honey highlights were now a brassy orange (insert Home Alone face). The hours spent outside and in the water had totally changed my hair color.

Since I’m not due for another appointment quite yet, I needed to find a way to give my color a little rehab, so I reached for R+Co’s new Sunset Blvd Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner ($29). The hair saving duo works like the purple hued products that are often part of a blonde gal’s hair routine (the purple pigments help to balance out the yellow tones in the hair since the colors are opposite each other on the color wheel), while being gentle enough to use daily. The natural mineral pigments in Sunset Blvd work to bright and correct brassy tones while a coconut cleanser helps to remove the impurities and build up that can dull your color.

I started getting compliments on my hair immediately after my first wash. My BFF told me my blonde highlights looked just as good as they did the very first day and another beauty editor complimented my amazing color (the ultimate stamp of approval comes from fellow beauty editors). My color is brighter, my hair is shinier, and I feel like I’m finally back to that perfect honey color that Cunningham originally mixed up for me.
