Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Are Married

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have finally tied the knot. And they kept the nuptials a complete secret until today.

The Jolie-Pitt family said in a statement to The Insider With Yahoo that the wedding took place Saturday in a small chapel on the property of their sprawling Provencal estate, Chateau Miraval, in France. The nondenominational civil ceremony was witnessed by family and friends — and, yes, their six children took part in the wedding. Maddox and Pax walked Jolie down the aisle, Zahara and Vivienne threw petals, and Shiloh and Knox were ring bearers for the union, which was "very much a family affair."

In advance of the private ceremony, Pitt and Jolie, who have been together since 2005, obtained a marriage license from a judge in their home state of California. The judge then traveled to France to conduct the ceremony. "They are therefore married under Californian law," said the statement.

The movie stars, who met filming Mr. and Mrs. Smith (while he was famously still married to Jennifer Aniston) and recently announced plans to co-star in By the Sea, confirmed their engagement in April 2012 after seven years of dating. Pitt presented Jolie with a stunning ring — featuring diamonds set on a band of yellow gold — that he helped their jeweler friend Robert Procop, who is behind the "Style of Jolie" jewelry line, design.

At the time of their engagement, the couple known as Brangelina said there was "no date set," and it has been a slow road to the altar. That is in part because Jolie underwent a preventive double mastectomy in 2013.

Pitt was also adamant that he and Jolie would not get married until their gay friends had similar rights. That hurdle was cleared last year when the Supreme Court overturned California's Prop 8, which had outlawed same-sex weddings.

In May, Jolie told People than they "occasionally" talked about wedding plans and included Maddox, 13, Pax, 11, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 8, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 6, in those conversations.

"We are discussing it with the children and how they imagine it might be," the 38-year-old Maleficent star revealed. "Which is verging on hysterical, how kids envision a wedding. They will in a way be the wedding planners. It's going to be Disney or paintball — one or the other!"

Jolie went on to tell the magazine that the kids have "strong opinions," but noted that however the wedding played out, it would "be fun. That's the important thing. When we do it, it will feel like a great day for our family."

Jolie's father, Jon Voight, attended the Emmy Awards on Monday night as a nominee for his Showtime series Ray Donovan. The actor, who has had a strained relationship with his daughter at times, didn't attend his daughter's hush-hush wedding, and apparently was unaware that it had taken place. Coincidentally, Pitt — who was not at the awards show in Hollywood — won an Emmy that night for producing the TV movie The Normal Heart.

This is the second marriage for Pitt, who was married to Aniston from 2000 to 2005, and the third for Jolie, whose ex-husbands include Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton.
