Shia LaBeouf: A Troubled Timeline Leading Up to the Actor's Latest Arrest

Shia LaBeouf was taken away in handcuffs at a Broadway performance of Cabaret at New York's Studio 54 on Thursday. The actor, 28, has been charged with criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct, and harassment. A spokesperson for the NYPD would not comment if drugs or alcohol were involved.

This is hardly the first time the Nymphomaniac star has made headlines for his brash behavior. So just when did the Even Stevens darling start becoming tabloid fodder? Let's take a look back at a timeline of his bad boy past.

November 2007: Already on the rise in Hollywood with the Transformers franchise underway, Shia is arrested in Chicago around 2:30 a.m. when he refuses to leave a Walgreens while intoxicated. Following his arrest, LaBeouf is described by authorities as "very courteous and polite."
 
July 2008: LaBeouf is arrested again on suspicion of drunken driving after an early morning wreck in which the actor injured his hand. "Shia is currently recovering from extensive hand surgery with plans to return to work on the set of Transformers 2 within one month," says a rep for the actor. Us Weekly alleges that prior to the accident Shia "was dancing around and acting really crazy… He kept doing shots of whiskey."

Later, Shia tells GQ, "I'm so angry. Because this accident was not caused by me. I got hit. I had a green. This f--ker ran a red light. And he flipped my truck, and he shoveled it on my hand. And my fingers are in the street… they're off, they're under the truck door, man. This is fake, dude," he continues, lifting his newly reconstructed hand. "This is hip bone and the skin that was left over…"

May 2010: Shia trashes his Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull director Steven Spielberg, saying the Oscar winner "dropped the ball" on the film.

At the Cannes Film Festival, LaBeouf tells reporters, "You can blame it on the writer and you can blame it on Steven. The actor's job is to make it come alive and make it work, and I couldn't do it. So that's my fault." Years later, he tells The Hollywood Reporter he deeply regretted having criticized the director.
 
February 2011: Shia gets into a bar brawl at Mad Bull's Tavern in Sherman Oaks, California. Police arrive and handcuff a number of people, including the actor, but ultimately they let everyone go. Shia addresses the incident a few months later in Details magazine, saying the fight started when he refused a patron and his girlfriend a photograph.

"I would like to be George Clooney diplomatic," he says at age 25. "I just don't have the wherewithal yet or the inner serenity. My bullshit meter is tuned very sensitive. The minute it starts kicking up, I get back to truth, and sometimes that involves, you know, 'I don't want to take a picture.' And if that's the case, am I an asshole for being honest? Or am I an asshole for being dishonest, smiling in your picture and I fucking hate being there? Which one is worse? These are the questions I ask myself that George Clooney doesn't ask."

LaBeouf also admits to drinking prior to the incident, but says it was for a role.

"I was actually researching," he explains. "As crazy as that sounds, to blame it on the acting thing, I was getting ready to make a movie about dudes who live on moonshine every single day."

June 2011: In the same Details interview, Shia gets extremely candid about his childhood.

He explains that his father often disappeared and spent years in a VA hospital trying to kick heroin. "I f--king hated him for it — choosing the hospital over me," LaBeouf reveals, adding he felt isolated and strange. "I felt like s--t about myself… I was basically alone. That does something to you." He notes that when one therapist suggested that he take out his anger on a stuffed animal, he chose a big teddy bear and "throttled it in a rage every day after school."

LaBeouf also confesses how he "got kicked out of every school I ever went to" for fighting. "You weren't fighting because you were a tough guy," he says. "You were fighting because a dude comes up and punches you in the chest — so either you hit him back or not only is he going to punch you every day but all his friends are going to beat the shit out of you. You fight out of fucking survival… I still have that in me, which gets me into trouble."

October 2011: While shooting The Company You Keep in Vancouver, Shia gets into another bar brawl.

August 2012: Shia tells he New York Post that he has given up drinking… except for when he needs to get into character, like for his role as a Prohibition-era bootlegger in Lawless.

He tells the Post, "My drinking on this movie was as un-destructive as I could possibly make it, if that makes sense. I did it for the movie. I didn't drink off-set for no reason. I did it because, when I showed up on set the next day, my [bleep]ing eyes looked like this and my face…had that drunk bloat that I needed, that I couldn't have if that wasn’t going on."

February 2013: Shia's first Broadway incident occurs just as he's gearing up to star in the play Orphans alongside Alec Baldwin. After clashing with the former 30 Rock actor, he exits the show.

"Due to creative differences, the producers of Orphans and Shia LaBeouf will be parting ways and he will not be continuing with the production," press representatives for the play say in a statement.

Baldwin later addresses the situation and notes that LaBeouf seemed "scattered" when he arrived to start work on the show "like a lot of young actors today." He also admits there was tension between them from the start, partly due to the fact that "LaBeouf seems to carry with him, to put it mildly, a jailhouse mentality wherever he goes."

December 2013

: Shia is accused of plagiarizing Daniel Clowes's 2007 comic book, Justin M. Damiano, in his film, HowardCantour.com. He responds on Twitter: "Copying isn't particularly creative work. Being inspired by someone else's idea to produce something new and different IS creative work." He also apparently plagorized some of his apologies, as well.

January 2014: Shia hires a skywriter in Los Angeles to apologize with this message: "I am sorry Daniel Clowes." He later declares that he is retiring "from all public life." He also states, "I am not famous anymore." Unfortunately, he doesn't stay under the radar for long and head-butts a stranger at a London bar later that month.

February 2014: LaBeouf opens up his own pop-up art exhibit in Los Angeles titled #IAMSORRY.  The actor cries and wears a paper bag over his head as fans come in one by one to sit with the actor.

A few days later, LaBeouf is due to promote Nymphomaniac at the Berlin Film Festival, but isn't feeling it. He storms out of a press conference about 10 minutes in after he is asked his first question about doing a movie with so many sex scenes.

"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much," he replies before departing.

June 2014: LaBeouf is taken out of a New York City theater during a performance of Cabaret for being disorderly and yelling obscenities during the performance. A spokesperson for the show states that the actor was "disruptive during Act 1" and was escorted out. The actor has been charged with criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct, and harassment.
