2016 Golden Trailer Awards winners list

The movies are good (most of the time), but it’s the marketing (and an effective trailer) that often gets people to the theater in the first place, and the 2016 Golden Reel Awards have crowned what they dub “the best in motion picture previews” released over the last year.

The 2016 ceremony, hosted by Wayne Brady Wednesday evening in Beverly Hills, crowned dozens of trailers from blockbusters (Deadpool) to indies (Grandma) across a diverse range of categories, including Trashiest Trailer (Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland) and Best Foreign Documentary (Amy).

Spotlight, however, won top honors at the event, nabbing the Best of Show prize, which has gone to films like Furious 7, Gravity, and Iron Man 3 in recent years. Other big winners of the evening included Warner Bros. and its New Line Cinema division, scoring 10 total wins for movie trailers and posters across several of their films, including Black Mass, The Conjuring 2, Keanu, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Winning Best Picture in Feb., Open Road Films’ Spotlight, which tells the story of a team of investigative reporters at the Boston Globe who helped expose scores of sexual abuse cases within the Catholic church, joined only a handful of Best Picture winners not released by one of the “Five Families” (Fox, Warner Bros., Disney, Paramount, Universal) to do so. One of its many previews, titled Answers, also won the Golden Reel Award for Best Independent Trailer.

The Golden Trailer Awards also shined a light on several films left out of the major awards season conversation throughout 2015. Despite Jennifer Lawrence winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy for her performance in Joy, the film was largely ignored by major awards bodies in the wake of similarly late-breaking 2015 titles like The Revenant. Here, David O. Russell’s effective trailer for the film was nominated for Most Original spot and won for Best Teaser. The powerful German film Phoenix, starring Nina Hoss, also earned some attention here, winning Best Foreign Drama, while another little-seen international title that traveled the film festival circuit, Iceland’s Rams, took home the Best Foreign Comedy award for its U.K. theatrical trailer.
