2018 Sundance Film Festival Awards Winners: ‘The Miseducation of Cameron Post’ and ‘Kailash’ Win Grand Jury Prizes

The 2018 Sundance Film Festival drew to a close this evening with the announcement of the annual fest’s award winners, care of a free-wheeling ceremony hosted by Jason Mantzoukas, who stars in Hannah Fidell’s Sundance comedy “The Long Dumb Road.”

The Grand Jury Prizes, considered Sundance’s biggest honor, went to Desiree Akhavan’s “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” (U.S. Dramatic), Derek Doneen’s “Kailash” (U.S. Documentary), Tolga Kara?elik’s “Butterflies” (World Cinema Dramatic), and Talal Derki’s “Of Fathers and Sons” (World Cinema Documentary).

Each year, the festival’s juries give out directing prizes in each of the four competition categories. This year, each directing prize went to a female filmmaker, including Sara Colangelo, Alexandria Bombach, Sandi Tan, and Isold Uggadottir. The festival’s dedicated screenwriting prize, the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, also went to another female filmmaker: Christina Choe, who made the Andrea Riseborough-starring drama “NANCY.”

The awards are meant to recognize “standout artistic and story elements” and are voted on by each of seven section juries, including, in the case of the new-this-year NEXT Innovator’s Award, a jury of one. Check out the full jury lists right here.

As in years past, festival audiences had a role in deciding the 2018 Audience Awards, and recognized five films in the U.S. Competition, World Competition, and NEXT categories. This year, audiences also voted on a Festival Favorite film across categories, which will be announced the week following the festival.

This year’s Audience Award winners include Andrew Heckler’s “Burden” (U.S. Dramatic), Rudy Valdez’s “The Sentence” (U.S. Documentary), Gustav M?ller’s “The Guilty” (World Cinema Dramatic), Alexandra Shiva’s “This Is Home” (World Cinema Documentary), and Aneesh Chaganty’s “Search” (NEXT).
