Steven Yeun, Tim Robinson, Lizzo bring Michigan connections to 2023 Emmy nominations

Michigan's talent pipeline to drama, comedy and music made a big impact when the Emmy nominations were announced Wednesday morning.

Steven Yeun earned a best actor in a limited or anthology series or movie nod for playing Danny Cho, a small-time contractor whose road rage spirals into a destructive grudge match in Netflix's "Beef."

Yeun, who's famous for "The Walking Dead" and his Oscar-nominated performance in "Minari," grew up in the Detroit suburbs of Taylor and Troy.

In the short form comedy or drama series category, Clarkston High School graduate (and "Detroiters" star and co-creator) Tim Robinson will compete for best actor for playing multiple characters in his quirky Netflix hit "I Think You Leave."

Robinson won an Emmy in the same category for "I Think You Should Leave" last year.

Detroit's own Sam Richardson (a "Detroiters" star and co-creator as well) is in the running for best guest actor in a comedy for his appearance as Edwin Akufo, a billionaire from Ghana, on AppleTV+'s "Ted Lasso." Richardson's guest spot as Akufo in the previous season also was nominated.

And if we're stretching the ties that bind, Michigan also can claim bragging rights for talk series nominee "Late Night with Seth Meyers" on NBC.

Meyers spent about five years of his childhood in Okemos in Ingham County.

The 75th Emmy Awards are scheduled to air 8 p.m., Sept. 18 on Fox.
