The 2024 Grammy nominations have arrived, and SZA, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and Victoria Monét are among the artists set to compete for the top prizes.

SZA, on the strength of her celebrated smash album, SOS, led all nominees this year with nine, while Monét’s breakthrough debut album, Jaguar II, helped her secure seven nominations. Rodrigo and Swift picked up six nominations each, as did boygenius, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste, and Brandy Clark.

More from Rolling Stone

Most of those artists will compete in the Album of the Year category, including SZA (SOS), Swift (Midnights), Rodrigo (Guts), Cyrus (Endless Summer Vacation), boygenius (The Record), and Batiste (World Music Radio). They’ll be joined by Janelle Monáe (The Age of Pleasure) and Lana Del Rey (Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd).

SZA, Swift, Rodrigo, and Monét are all up for Record of the Year for “Kill Bill,” “Anti-Hero,” “Vampire,” and “On My Mama,” respectively. Additionally, Cyrus was nominated for “Flowers,” boygenius for “Not Strong Enough,” Batiste for “Worship,” and Eilish for her Barbie soundtrack hit “What Was I Made For?”

For Song of the Year, “Vampire,” “Flowers,” “Kill Bill,” “What Was I Made For?,” and “Anti-Hero” were all nominated in that category as well, as were Del Rey’s “A&W,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” and “Batiste’s “Butterfly.”

As for Best New Artist, the category featured many of this year’s biggest breakthrough stars: Monét, Ice Spice, Gracie Abrams, Coco Jones, Jelly Roll, Noah Kahan, the War and Treaty, and Fred Again.. There were, however, some notable snubs, including Peso Pluma and PinkPantheress.

Compared to the 2023 Grammys and the Beyoncé of-it-all (she became the most decorated artist in Grammys history but once again failed to win a major category), the 2024 awards don’t have one particularly dominant narrative. But there are a few.

Swift, for instance, has won Album of the Year three times already and could become the first artist to take the prize home four times (a feat only accomplished so far by mixing and mastering engineers). SZA winning a couple of major trophies would be particularly well-deserved and overdue, considering she only won her first Grammy in 2022 (for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her Doja Cat collab “Kiss Me More”).

Cyrus, meanwhile, has never picked up this many Grammy nominations, having only previously received one nod for her solo work, Best Pop Vocal Album for Bangerz in 2015 (she was technically nominated for Album of the Year in 2022 for her work on Lil Nas X’s Montero). Rodrigo will have another chance to win a major prize after her debut, Sour, succeeded mostly in the genre categories in 2022 (she did win Best New Artist that year). All that said, though, it certainly would not be surprising if Recording Academy voters rallied once again behind Batiste, who shocked pretty much everyone when he won Album of the Year for We Are in 2022.

Phoebe Bridgers was quietly one of the most nominated artists this year, picking up six alongside her boygenius bandmates, plus an additional Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her collaboration with SZA, “Ghost in the Machine.” The Barbie movie soundtrack earned an array of nominations, not just through Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” but also Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s Aqua-sampling “Barbie World,” and even Ryan Gosling’s original, “I’m Just Ken.”

Interestingly, despite the massive success country music has enjoyed this year on streaming services and the Billboard charts, the genre was totally shut out of Album, Song, and Record of the Year. Furthermore, the artist at the forefront of the genre’s dominance this year, Morgan Wallen, earned just one nomination, Best Country Song for “Last Night,” a song that spent a whopping 16 weeks at Number One on the Hot 100. (Wallen’s success this year came off the back of some serious controversies, including a video of him using the N-word.)

In Wallen’s absence, Zach Bryan picked up a few nominations (Best Country Album and Best Country Song and Duo/Group Performance for his hit with Kacey Musgraves, “I Remember Everything”). Tyler Childers landed several noms as well (including one for Best Music Video for his poignant “In Your Love” visual), as did breakthrough stars Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson. Luke Combs picked up a Best Country Solo Performance nod for his cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” while celebrated stalwart singer-songwriter Brandy Clark quietly dominated the country (and Americana genre) categories with six total nominations.

Also totally shut out of the big three awards this year: rap. In the genre categories, though, Killer Mike picked up several nominations, as did Drake and 21 Savage, with the former bending his “No Grammy Submissions” rule a bit for the collaborative LP Her Loss. Coi Leray, Lil Durk, Doja Cat, Nas, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, Baby Keem, and Kendrick Lamar also picked up nods, as did Burna Boy, who broke through the Global and African categories to notch a Best Melodic Rap Performance for “Sittin’ on Top of the World” with 21 Savage.

That was one of four nominations for Burna Boy, who also appeared in this year’s brand-new category, Best African Music Performance. Other nominees included Asake and Olamide, Davido and Muse Keys, Ayra Starr, and Tyler. All the artists in this category except Burna Boy are first-time Grammy nominees as well.

Over in pop, many of the heavy hitters from the general field — Swift, Rodrigo, Eilish, Cyrus, and Del Rey — will also be competing there alongside the likes of Doja Cat, Ed Sheeran, and Kelly Clarkson. The dance categories, meanwhile, were largely dominated by Fred Again.., who picked up four nominations, while Troye Sivan earned his first two Grammy nods — Best Pop Dance Recording and Best Music Video — for “Rush.”

Meanwhile, likely general field favorite SZA padded her 2024 Grammy stats with several R&B category nominations. That’s also where Victoria Monét added to her tally, earning nods in categories like Best R&B Album, R&B Performance, R&B Song, and Traditional R&B Performance. And Summer Walker, previously nominated for working on Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, notably notched her first Grammy nomination as a solo artist, Best R&B Album for Clear 2: Soft Life EP.

The 66th Grammy Awards will take place on Feb. 4, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
