2025 Cinema Audio Society nominations list: ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Wicked’ make the cut, but not ‘Emilia Pérez’

The Cinema Audio Society announced nominations on Tuesday, Jan. 7, honoring the best in cinematic sound mixing. Nominees for live-action motion picture sound mixing are A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, and Wicked. That includes four of the top five contenders in Gold Derby’s current racetrack odds for Best Sound. Deadpool & Wolverine is the outlier, ranked 10th in our odds. Missing from the CAS nominations list were the Golden Globe-leading Emilia Pérez, as well as three other films shortlisted by the Motion Picture Academy: Blitz, Alien: Romulus, and Joker: Folie à Deux.

The CAS Awards used to correlate with the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing, but that category was consolidated with Best Sound Editing for the 93rd annual awards honoring the best films of 2020. Now the Oscars present a single award for Best Sound. The Oscar champs since them have been Sound of Metal (2020), Dune: Part One (2021), Top Gun: Maverick (2022), and The Zone of Interest (2023). The first three also won the CAS Award for live-action sound mixing, but not Zone of Interest.

Last year CAS nominated Barbie, Ferrari, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, and Oppenheimer in their live action sound mixing category, with Oppenheimer winning. The Zone of Interest wasn’t even nominated. In fact, only two of those overlapped with the eventual Oscar nominees for Best Sound: Maestro and Oppenheimer. The rest of the Oscars lineup consisted of The Creator, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, and ultimate winner Zone of Interest.

Zone of Interest was nominated by the Motion Picture Sound Editors in their foreign language category, but even there it couldn’t eke out a win. Instead, the award went to the survival thriller Society of the Snow, while Oppenheimer was awarded for its feature effects/foley and its dialogue/ADR. One major industry group the Oscars did agree with, however, was BAFTA, where The Zone of Interest‘s victory presaged its eventual Oscar upset.
