2025 Oscars nominations announcement postponed due to deadly Los Angeles wildfires
Due to the deadly and destructive wildfires in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced several shifts to the 2025 Oscars calendar on Monday, including delaying the nominations to Thursday, Jan. 23.
“We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community. The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said. “Due to the still-active fires in the Los Angeles area, we feel it is necessary to extend our voting period and move the date of our nominations announcement to allow additional time for our members.”

In the new timeline, Oscar nominations voting, which was to end on Jan. 14, will continue through Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. The Oscar nominations announcement—initially set for Jan. 17 but shifted last week to Jan. 19—was moved to Jan. 23 at 5:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. ET. The Academy noted that the live announcement will be a virtual event without in-person media coverage.
Kramer and Yang also announced changes to the Oscars event schedule. The Oscar nominees luncheon scheduled for Monday, Feb. 10 was canceled, and the Scientific and Technical Awards, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 18, were indefinitely delayed.
“Additionally, as we want to be sensitive to the infrastructure and lodging needs of the region in these next few weeks, it is imperative that we make some changes to our schedule of events, which we believe will have the support of our industry,” Kramer and Yang said. “Our members always share how important it is for us to come together as a community, and we are determined to use this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compassionate industry. We also look forward to honoring our frontline workers who have aided with the fires, recognizing those impacted, and encouraging people to join the Academy in supporting the relief efforts. We will get through this together and bring a sense of healing to our global film community.”
In addition to the date changes, Gold Derby has learned the Academy also donated $750,000 to the Motion Picture & Television Fund.
The Academy has not moved the Oscars telecast date, which remains scheduled for Sunday, March 2. However, to acknowledge the unpredictable nature of the Los Angeles wildfires, which have left thousands without homes and thousands more evacuated, the Academy ended its press release with the following: “Please note that all dates are subject to change.”
