And the Best Sports Program winner was Simone Biles Rising, the Netflix show chronicling the superstar’s withdrawal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to her mental health. The other nominees were Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants, Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend, and Triumph: Jesse Owens and the Berlin Olympics.
These two winners were revealed at the guild’s East Coast celebration on Monday. Winners of the Short Form Award, the PGA Innovation Award, and the Vance Van Petten Entrepreneurial Spirit Producing Award will be announced later this week at the West Coast celebration.
All of the other PGA Awards categories in film and television will be unveiled on Saturday at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Special honorees at that intimate ceremony will include Chris Meledandri (David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures), Dana Walden (Milestone Award), Taika Waititi (Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television), and Lynda Obst & Paula Weinstein (Trailblazer Award).
SEEGold Derby odds for the PGA Awards
The Producers Guild of America has been doling out prizes for Hollywood producers since 1990. The only two shows to win Best Children’s Program have been Sesame Street and Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021). Some of the notable Best Sports Program champions of the past include Beckham (2023), Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off (2022), What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali (2019), and Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel (2012, 2014-17).
The PGA race for Best Picture is often seen as a key bellwether for the Oscars, especially since many of the guild’s members also vote for the Academy Awards. This year’s PGA nominees in the top race are Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, A Real Pain, September 5, The Substance, and Wicked. The Oscar list only matches eight of those, with I’m Still Here and Nickel Boys replacing A Real Pain and September 5. The Oscars will take place March 2.
