‘Conclave,’ Timothée Chalamet, ‘Only Murders’ score upsets at shocking 2025 SAG Awards: See all the winners
The actors have weighed in on the 2025 Oscar race — and it's potentially game-changing.
Sunday’s 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards saw several of this year’s key competitors face off one last time before the Academy Awards on March 2 and the ceremony delivered more than a few surprises. Perhaps none was more significant than Timothée Chalamet winning Best Actor for his turn as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown in an upset over the awards-season favorite, The Brutalist star Adrien Brody. Or maybe it was Conclave thwarting high-powered rivals Anora and Wicked to land the night's biggest prize of best film ensemble.

Wicked came into the evening with a record-tying five nominations for film categories but failed to win anything. Anora, after a dominating run in precursor awards in recent weeks, finished 0-for-3.
Meanwhile, Demi Moore re-established herself as the Oscar frontrunner for Best Actress for The Substance after holding off a late-season charge from Anora’s Mikey Madison. And the inevitable duo of Kieran Culkin and Zoe Salda?a continued to collect hardware for their respective supporting roles in A Real Pain and Emilia Pérez.
Speaking of inevitable, Shōgun set a record by sweeping all four categories it was contending in: drama ensemble, drama actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), drama actress (Anna Sawai), and stunt ensemble. (The series actually had five nominations; since SAG doesn’t have supporting categories on the TV slate, Tadanobu Asano wound up in the same drama category as the invincible Sanada.)
In another of the night's major shockers, Only Murders in the Building finally got off the snide, winning its first major awards for comedy ensemble and Martin Short (who was fifth in the Gold Derby odds coming into the show) for comedy actor. Jean Smart scored for comedy actress for Hacks. In the limited-series/TV-movie category, Jessica Gunning triumphed for Baby Reindeer, and Colin Farrell won for The Penguin.
The night's biggest TV snub was The Bear, which went 0-for-4 after a polarizing third season.
Jane Fonda was presented the Life Achievement Award, honoring a seven-decade career that includes two Oscars, seven Golden Globes, and an Emmy; a filmography packed with such classics as Klute, Julia, Coming Home, The China Syndrome, and On Golden Pond; and, as presenter Julia Louis-Dreyfus noted, a spot on Richard Nixon's infamous enemy list for her anti-Vietnam War activism. The 87-year-old actress delivered an impassioned call for action — and empathy — in light of the charged political climate. "Make no mistake," she said. "Empathy is not weak or woke. And by the way, 'woke' just means you give a damn about other people."
Kristen Bell hosted the show, using her opening monologue to pay tribute to the firefighters who battled the devastating wildfires that plagued the Los Angeles region last month.
With actors constituting the largest voting bloc in the Motion Picture Academy, the SAG Awards are a key harbinger of the Oscars. In 2024, three of the four SAG acting champs won corresponding Academy Awards: Cillian Murphy (lead actor), Robert Downey Jr. (supporting actor), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (supporting actress). Lily Gladstone (SAG) and Emma Stone (Oscar) split the lead actress prizes. SAG’s proxy for Best Picture, the ensemble award, has doubled up at the Oscars in four of the past five years (and 15 of 29 years all time), including last year with Oppenheimer.
