Michael Des Barres talks 'vibe adviser' job on Lady Gaga's 'A Star Is Born'

The new extended movie trailer for this yearā€™s A Star Is Born remake, starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, came out to major buzz this week, but thereā€™s an unsung music veteran behind the scenes: Michael Des Barres, the resident ā€œvibe adviserā€ making sure that all of the filmā€™s rock ā€™nā€™ roll details are legit.

The 70-year-old rocker/actor, whoā€™s served as the frontman of the Led Zeppelin-associated bands Silverhead and Detective and the supergroups Chequered Past and Power Station, was recruited by A Star Is Born producer Bill Gerber, who used to manage Detective back in the day.

ā€œBilly Gerber especially wanted it to look real,ā€ Des Barres tells Yahoo Entertainment. ā€œSo, letā€™s cut to the chase. If itā€™s a rock ā€™nā€™ roll movie and youā€™ve got the wrong bracelet, Iā€™m not going to enjoy the movie. The wrong earring, the wrong hat, a terrible wig ā€” that has ruined every rock ā€™nā€™ roll movie.ā€ But Des Barres insists that the reboot (or ā€œre-high-heel-bootā€) of A Star Is Born ā€œwill be the real thing, even if we have to dig up some costumes. So, I went there really more in an advisory capacity. Itā€™s about the tiniest f***ing thing.ā€

It was Des Barresā€™s job to pay attention to the movieā€™s rock ā€™nā€™ roll minutiae, whether it was telling one unnamed actor, ā€œPerhaps you shouldnā€™t be wearing what youā€™re wearing ā€” this is 19-whatever-it-isā€ (Des Barres wonā€™t reveal any more details about this fashion faux pas, but he says it ā€œhad something to do with [time-period-inappropriate] flared trousersā€), or telling the faux roadies to move with more urgency.

ā€œYou can feel it, how roadies move,ā€ he explains. ā€œWhat is a roadie? They run. Itā€™s almost like a love affair between a roadie and a guitar player. If that string breaks, man, that guy is there with another guitar, whatever it is. That is so beautiful to watch. So, I sort of saw lackadaisical vibes going on, and I thought, ā€˜No, no, no. Youā€™ve got to step that up, 100 miles an hour! That guyā€™s in the middle of a solo. Are you kidding?ā€™ It was in that capacity.ā€

Des Barres, who made his film debut at age 17 in the 1967 Sidney Poitier film To Sir, With Love and recently reprised his iconic role of villain Murdoc in CBSā€™s MacGyver reboot, is used to giving these sorts of on-set style pointers. The real-life rocker has also played a musician onscreen, whether it was the bad-boy womanizer in Allison Andersā€™s 1999 rock ā€™nā€™ roll dramedy Sugar Town or the obnoxious punk singer Dog on 1978ā€™s famous ā€œScum of the Earthā€ episode of WKRP in Cincinnati. ā€œScum of the Earth were written as punks, with ripped this and ripped that and dog collars,ā€ he recalls of that fictional sitcom bandā€™s original TV wardrobe. ā€œI said, ā€˜Put them in suits. Put them in suits and ties. And letā€™s see them throw a TV out the window.ā€™ It was so much more interesting.ā€
