30+ TV Show Book Adaptations Arriving This Year So Far

Several best-selling books have inspired new and returning television series this year as well as box office magnets like It Ends With Us and later in the fall — Wicked. Still novel adaptations more are in the works, like the many romantic comedies of Emily Henry and a few more Colleen Hoover best-sellers.

The year 2024 has covered the range of historical fiction like Apple TV+’s Pachinko or FX’s Shōgun, young adult best-sellers like Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper graphic novels and John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down, science fiction with Apple TV+’s Dark Matter and Netflix’s The Three Body Problem and many more.

Tell Me Lies Season 2 – Hulu

Tell Me Lies Season 2 will continue the eight-year story of a toxic relationship, based on Carola Lovering’s book. Season 2 arrives Sept. 4 on Hulu.

The Perfect Couple – Netflix

The Perfect Couple series coming to Netflix Sept. 5 is based on the book by Elin Hildebrand. The series will star Nicole Kidman, Live Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson, Meghann Fahy and more in a messy murder mystery.

Three Women – Starz

Heartstopper Season 3 – Netflix

Say Nothing – Hulu

Nightbitch – Theaters

Amy Adams will star in Searchlight Pictures’ adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s debut novel Nightbitch. The horror film, adapted by Marianne Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Can You Ever Forgive Me?), will arrive in theaters December 6.

Following in the footsteps of the 2011 film directed by Lone Sherfig and starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, Netflix launched a television adaptation of David Nicholls’ best-selling novel starring Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod.

James Clavell’s 1975 book served as the basis for FX’s Shōgun, starring Anna Sawai, Cosmo Jarvis, Tadanobu Asano and more.

Mary & George – Starz

Mary & George is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers, who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher.

Starz’s period series starring Nicholas Galitzine, Julianne Moore and Tony Curran is based on the 2017 book The King’s Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James I by journalist Benjamin Woolley.

Apples Never Fall – Peacock

Apples Never Fall is Liane Moriarty’s latest book to get a television adaptation treatment after Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu and Big Little Lies on Max. Melanie Marnich served as showrunner behind the limited series, which starred Annette Bening, Sam Neill, Alison Brie, Jake Lacy, Conor Merrigan Turner, Essie Randles, Georgia Flood and more.

Manhunt – Apple TV+

Apple TV+’s limited series starring Tobias Menzies, Anthony Boyle, Will Harrison, Lovie Simone, Patton Oswalt and more is based on the history book Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer by James Swanson.

Palm Royale – Apple TV+

Palm Royale, starring Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Carol Burnett, Ricky Martin, Leslie Bibb, Josh Lucas and more, is loosely based on the book Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel.

3 Body Problem – Netflix

Hulu’s Under the Bridge follows the real-life murder of teenager Reena Virk in British Columbia. Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone star in the adaptation of Rebecca Godfrey’s book.

Tattooist of Auschwitz – Peacock

Based on Carl Hiaasen’s best-seller, Bad Monkey premiered on Apple TV+ Wednesday, August 14. The show stars Vince Vaughn, L. Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 – Prime Video
