What are the 5 best movies of 2024 so far? Here are our picks.
Though Hollywood has yet to give us anything like "Barbie" this year, Pixar's "Inside Out 2" has already grossed half a billion dollars at the box office, proving that audiences will leave the comfort of their 4K television screens and look up from their smartphones if they're presented with entertainment that is compelling enough.
We'll still have to wait until January 2025 to find out which movies we should have been watching, but in the meantime, the Banner-Herald has selected five films that we felt were some of the greatest 2024 has had to offer so far. Every title on our list is currently available via streaming channels or on demand rental.
Film review: Down-and-dirty crime thriller 'MaXXXine' revels in 1980s Hollywood sleaze
5. 'The Underdoggs'
Dismissed as a ripoff of the 1970s classic "The Bad News Bears," Amazon's "The Underdoggs" stars A-list entertainer Snoop Dogg as a troubled former NFL player who must coach a youth football team as a condition of his community service. Like "Major Payne" (1995) and "Bustin' Loose" (1981) before it, "The Underdoggs" is an expletive-filled good time with true heart at the center.
4. 'Stopmotion'
As the title suggests, this British horror flick centers on a woman who is tasked with completing her recently deceased mother's stop motion animation project. As the characters in the project take on a life of their own, their little bodies get bigger and more disgusting-looking as a series of murders take place around the studio. The combination of live action and stop motion results in some truly horrifying scenes.
3. 'Jim Henson: Idea Man'
Oscar-winning director Ron Howard ("A Beautiful Mind") takes a feature-length look at the life and career of Muppets and Sesame Street creator Jim Henson, a visionary who took family entertainment and the art of puppetry to previously unseen heights. Henson's achievements are revisited through the use of new and archival interviews, shedding light on a complex filmmaker who was far ahead of his time.
2. 'Lisa Frankenstein'
Robin Williams' daughter Zelda wrote, directed and produced this modern comedy horror classic starring Kathryn Newton as Lisa, a teenage goth whose obsession with the grave of a Victorian-era man (Cole Sprouse) gains new life after a bolt of lightning resurrects him as a zombie. Packed full of bizarre and enthusiastic performances, "Lisa Frankenstein" is a quotable gem worthy of its own rabid fandom.
1. 'Love Lies Bleeding'
If there's any justice in the world, bodybuilder Katy O'Brian's breakout role in this supernaturally-tinged crime thriller will give way to an Arnold Schwarzenegger-like career as a big-screen action hero for popular 21st century cinema. Here, O'Brian co-stars with the ever-intense Kristen Stewart in director Rose Glass's nightmarish romance that includes Ed Harris in an unforgettably nasty villain role.
