Vevo Certified Live hosted the free concert for die-hard 5SOS fans, which was filled with the pop-punk band’s hits from their self-titled debut album. Last Wednesday, the guys announced the name of their sophomore album, Sounds Good Feels Good, which is set to arrive Oct. 23. Two singles — “She’s Kinda Hot” and “Fly Away” — have already been released.
5 Seconds of Summer Explains Why ‘She’s Kinda Hot’ Sounds Like My Chemical Romance
“Sounds Good Feels Good is not the same as the last album at all. It’s very personal to us,” drummer/vocalist Ashton Irwin tells Billboard. “The writing is a lot more emotional and explores different subjects that we haven’t written about before. It really connects with us emotionally. We talk about childhood, we even touch on parents’ divorce and stuff like that as well. We touch on love, heartbreak, loneliness, depression, anxiety — all types of stuff.”
The band said their upcoming album explores the issues that matter most to them. Although they learned a lot from creating their first successful album, 5SOS went “deep” while writing tracks for Sounds Good Feels Good. “You can’t get (Vevo Certified) without getting balls deep!” guitarist Michael Clifford chimes in.
Lead vocalist and guitar player Luke Hemmings’ favorite track from the new album is “Vapor,” which Clifford and Irwin wrote together. Clifford says his favorite track is “Outer Space,” which Hemmings says they recorded on a beach, sitting around a fire at midnight.
5 Seconds of Summer Announces Second Album ‘Sounds Good Feels Good’
“It’s proper old-school producer style. At the end of it, you’ll hear some ocean,” Irwin tells Billboard. “There was a man who came up to us and asked us what we were doing, and you can hear his footsteps in the track, which I think is cool.”
5SOS made sure the Barker Hangar was filled with screaming girls, as they jumped on the stage and launched into “End Up Here.” They sang their hits “Amnesia,” “She Looks So Perfect” and “What I Like About You” and newest single “She’s Kinda Hot.” The four boys repeatedly thanked fans throughout the show and expressed their excitement for their new album, as well as their milestone for “She Looks So Perfect.”
The live performance will be made available for all Vevo users on Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. ET.
