Some noteworthy titles:
The Handmaid’s Tale: Special Edition, by Margaret Atwood
Actress Claire Danes leads a cast performance of Atwood’s classic, which has found a new audience with Hulu’s Elisabeth Moss-led TV series, which returns for its third season in June. The terrifying dystopian tale depicts women living in a world where they are forced into subservient roles, required to produce children for the powerful men around them when the men’s own wives cannot. As the official description reads, “the message (and the warning) is now more timely than ever.”
Becoming, by Michelle Obama
Meet the former FLOTUS before she’d ever laid eyes on President Barack Obama in her memoir, which is already one of the top-selling books of the decade. Obama, who narrates the audio book herself, later shares details from her days on the campaign trail and in the White House.
In the Country We Love: My Family Divided, by Diane Guerrero
This memoir from the Orange Is the New Black and Jane the Virgin actress, who was born in New Jersey, recounts her experience at 14 when her parents and brother were deported back to their native Colombia without her. It’s a personal take on an issue that’s on the minds of many Americans.
Every Day I’m Hustling, by Vivica A. Fox
The actress, from movies such as Independence Day, Kill Bill, Two Can Play That Game and so many others, offers strategies for changing your life and making your own luck in a book about succeeding in business and love. Expect her to drop some familiar names and some honest, funny advice.
Patti Smith at the Minetta Lane: Words and Music, by Patti Smith
The artist and musician shares stories from her fascinating life, which has included living in New York City’s Chelsea Hotel in the ’70s, rocking out with Bruce Springsteen and many others, as well as writing her own music and poetry, in this show. Audible teases it as “an intimate portrait of an icon, focusing on family and taking stock of a near to 50-year career devoted to artistic integrity.”
Valley of the Dolls, by Jacqueline Susann
Laverne Cox, known for her work on Orange Is the New Black, narrates the 50th anniversary edition of the 1966 classic, which was famously adapted into a 1967 movie starring Patty Duke and Sharon Tate. The novel, about a group of female friends over two decades, became a publishing phenomenon, with more than 31 million copies sold to date.
Heads Will Roll, created by Kate McKinnon and Emily Lynne
Most of these suggestions are books, but not this one. Saturday Night Live favorite Kate McKinnon and creative partner Emily Lynne, who happens to be her sister, are behind this new audio comedy, which debuts May 2 but is available for pre-order now. The plot is that an evil queen’s reign is threatened by an uprising of peasants and … c’mon, you know it’ll be funny with McKinnon on board. Guest stars include Meryl Streep, Tim Gunn, Audra McDonald, Peter Dinklage, the guys from Queer Eye and more.
