Does Denny Die in 9-1-1?
The 9-1-1 promo starts with some feel-good Halloween season vibes and “bizarre rescues,” including a man with a pumpkin stuck on his head. Fun! The vibe quickly shifts to a potentially life threatening situation, however, when a car crashes into a house and Denny [Declan Pratt] was in its path. The voiceover teases, “…and living nightmares” as it’s explained a trick or treater has been pinned by a car. As Hen approaches the scene, she screams out “Denny!” and later yells, “We need blood!”
The upcoming episode follows on the heels of a happy ending: Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms) get Mara (Askyler Bell) back. In an October interview with TV Insider, Hinds and Thoms gave some insight into filming the happy reunion. “It was such a relief, such a relief really, her running into the house. It was just so great,” Thoms shared.
Hinds added, “That was heartwarming. We’ve had the fortune of being able to do this show for a while and build these relationships in an organic and authentic way. We never know if we’re about to kind of lose a character on the show or we get to continue to build our family, and so when she ran back in that house, it was like everything in the world was right in that moment and it felt good to just embrace as a whole family again.”

When the interviewer asked, “It kind of feels like there has to be some kind of pain coming there. So is there, and for whom?,” Hinds confirmed, with a laugh, “There’s always pain coming.” Thoms noted, “It is 9-1-1, okay? Can’t be too happy for too long.”
Hinds added, “We have to sit in our joy when we can. And just respond to the pain when it comes and who knows? Who knows who it’s going to be next?”
In a Reddit discussion about the 9-1-1 preview, fans were understandably protective of Denny and worried about the terrifying situation. “They really can’t let Hen be happy for like one episode can they?!” one fan noted. Another shared, “At first i was like OMG I’m excited for next week’s Halloween episode, its gonna a fun one, but then NOOOOOOOOO DENNNNNYYYYY!!!!!!!! I swear to God this show is cruel.”
Many called for the show to “leave Denny alone!” and give Hen and Karen a break. “Hen really can’t relax for a second, huh?” one person noted, while others stated, “Stop torturing Hen and Karen!” and “Oh come on! Why you giving Hen more trauma?”
Another fan noted, “Once they learned that Aisha Hinds plays this kind of emotional angst to perfection, they just layer it on.”

In another Reddit discussion, fans speculated that Denny is likely fine but the teaser did an excellent job of making it look like he is seriously injured.
“I kind of think the promo line where Chimney says ‘we lost his pulse’ is a misdirect and he’ll be referring to the driver or something. I think Denny will be hurt but I don’t think it’ll be as they’re making it look,” they explained.
Another fan added, “This whole thing could be a misdirect tbh. I’m not fully convinced that it’s even real and not part of a dream/hallucination. The episode synopsis says ‘Buck’s Halloween decorations become a little scarier than he had hoped.’ I interpret it as the decorations literally come to life in Buck’s dream/hallucination.”
9-1-1 is available to stream on Hulu.
