'Agatha All Along' brings witches, comedy, musical numbers to the MCU: What to know about the series that picks up where 'WandaVision' left off
Kathryn Hahn stars as Agatha Harkness in the Marvel Television spinoff series on Disney+ that sees the witch trying to regain her magical powers.
Marvel Studios fans have gone through a relative drought in 2024, with only Deadpool & Wolverine having landed in theaters in July and a short Echo miniseries on Disney+ in January. So it’s fitting that Agatha All Along, the first live-action Marvel Television show in nine months, is a callback to the very first Marvel series on Disney+: WandaVision.
Kathryn Hahn is reprising her role as Agatha Harkness, a witch who tried to steal the powers of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) in the 2021 series. Now, Agatha is powerless and has to regain her magical abilities. She must also find a new coven to help her survive the trials of the Witches’ Road.
This series, which premieres its first two of nine episodes Sept. 18 on Disney+, is going to be a departure from most of Marvel’s previous shows — with its comedy and musical numbers — as well as the established comic book mythology behind the characters. To bring everyone up to speed, we’re sharing everything you need to know about Agatha All Along.
Who is Agatha Harkness?
Agatha Harkness’s roots go back 55 years to her first appearance in the Fantastic Four comic book series. In 1969, writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby introduced Agatha as an elderly witch who was one of the survivors from the Salem witch trials in the 17th century. She became the nanny of Franklin Richards — the son of the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic and Susan Storm Richards/Invisible Woman — before going on to train Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the ways of magic.
WandaVision introduced a physically younger version of Agatha who had evil intentions toward Wanda and her power. Agatha even attempted to steal Wanda’s birthright after threatening twins Billy and Tommy, the children Wanda had conjured for her dream life with Vision. As punishment for her transgressions, Wanda cast a spell that left Agatha trapped in the false identity of their town Westview, N.J.’s nosiest neighbor, Agnes. That’s where Agatha All Along will continue her story.
Because of the impact of Hahn’s portrayal of Agatha in the MCU, her comic book character was recently de-aged to a much younger woman with a more sinister edge than she had in the past.
Meet the witches
Aubrey Plaza, who previously had a featured role on FX’s adaptation of Marvel’s Legion, is portraying Rio Vidal, a new character who was created for this series. The trailers for the show have hinted that Rio and Agatha have a history together. Rio is also known as the Green Witch, but her powers have yet to be defined.
Out of all the witches in Agatha’s new coven, Sasheer Zamata’s Jennifer Kale has the longest history in Marvel’s comic book universe. Jennifer’s earliest appearances were alongside Man-Thing, the creature who memorably had a cameo in the live-action Marvel Halloween special Werewolf by Night in 2022. It’s unknown if this version of Jennifer shares that same connection to Man-Thing.
Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn) is a more recent addition to Marvel’s comic book lineup. She’s only appeared a handful of times, but Alice is known as a protector witch.
That ’70s Show and That ’90s Show star Debra Jo Rupp had a small supporting role in WandaVision as Sharon Davis, one of the residents of Westview who was transformed by Wanda. Sharon wasn’t revealed to be a witch on that series, so it’s currently unknown how or why she was recruited for Agatha’s new coven.
Grammy- and Tony Award-winning singer Patti LuPone has been cast as Lilia Calderu, a powerful witch who led her own coven in the comics. LuPone’s singing abilities will come in handy, because Agatha All Along will feature several original musical numbers.
The final member of Agatha’s coven is Joe Locke’s character, who answers to Teen. Since Locke was cast, it’s been heavily rumored that the Heartstopper actor would be playing a teenage incarnation of Wanda’s son, Billy Kaplan. If that turns out to be the case, it raises several questions about how he can exist in a world where he was never born. Teen has also been cursed by someone to prevent him from revealing his true identity. But who has the power to do that? And why? That has to be one of the central mysteries of the season.
Will Elizabeth Olsen appear in ‘Agatha All Along’?
If Olsen appears as Wanda in this series, it’s been an incredibly well-kept secret. So far, there are no indications that the Avengers actress will guest star in Agatha All Along. Olsen recently reiterated her desire to reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff if “there’s a good way to use her.”
Will there be another ‘WandaVision’ spinoff?
Yes, but not until 2026. Paul Bettany has signed on to star in a solo Vision series, with James Spader reprising his voice-over role as Vision’s creator, Ultron.
That series may be two years away, but Marvel fans have Agatha's story to follow in the meantime.
