WATCH: ‘Agatha All Along’: Writer Jac Schaeffer discusses Agatha’s role in the Marvel Universe

Throughout the week of “Agatha All Along’s” release, ABC4 will be releasing a series of articles focused on the show.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — When “WandaVision”, a show featured around the MCU’s Scarlet Witch launched in 2021, it also introduced audiences to a quirky antagonist by the name of Agatha Harkness. Now, Agatha is coming back to the big screen for her own spin-off series.

In the show “Agatha All Along”, which premieres on Sept. 18 on Disney+, Agatha finds herself out of power after a teen helps break her from the spell Scarlet Witch put her under at the end of “WandaVision.” He asks her to take him down the “Witches’ Road”, where if a witch survives the journey through it, they’re rewarded with what they’re missing. Intrigued, Agatha joins the teen and forms a coven to journey on this mysterious road.

ABC4 Film Critic Patrick Beatty spoke to writer and director Jac Schaeffer, who also worked on”WandaVision” in the first part of a continuing coverage series focused on “Agatha All Along” as it premieres this Wednesday.

Schaeffer shared that she’s fascinated by both the character Agatha and her actress, Kathryn Hahn, remarking that the two of them are a dream scenario for a writer.

“Specifically, for me in my time at Marvel, I love writing for women and I love writing for powerful women. Agatha has such a specific relationship with her power. So many of the other women in the MCU have reluctance about their power or conflicted feelings. Agatha wants as much power that is available to her, and then she’ll also take yours and that’s totally fascinating to me,” she said.

Schaeffer also talked about what it was like to work with actresses Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza.

“They know each other and love each other. Of course, they were on Parks and Rec and never had scenes together, so this was a real treat,” she said. “I think it’s part of the reason that Aubrey signed on is to do this with Kathryn. I mean, they really have like explosive chemistry.”

She continued: “…I was a little worried things would catch fire. It was so crackling, the energy in the room. I found — it’s not normally my speed — but I found I liked to give Aubrey her direction without Kathryn hearing because her character is kind of unpredictable. So it became sort of with Aubrey, sort of whispering little things to her, because there’s also just so much between the two of them. So much is hidden. There are so many sort of levels. The truth is just way down deep between the two of them, where it takes a lot to get all the way to the truth.”

When asked if Schaeffer could see Agatha being teamed up with a character in a Deadpool and Wolverine-style story, she said her pick would be the villain Hela from the Thor movies.

Stream “Agatha All Along” on Disney+ starting on Sept. 18, and stay tuned for more of ABC4’s articles as we continue with Agatha All Week-long.
