Alan Cumming on That Backwards ‘N’ in ‘Instinct’ Art: ‘A Secret Code About Saying No to Trump’
CBS’ new crime procedural “Instinct” isn’t an in-your-face commentary on politics in America — mainly because it focuses on solving crimes. But British star and executive producer Alan Cumming says the show’s title may be making a statement you wouldn’t expect from a series like this.
The “Instinct” art features a backwards “N,” which is a hidden message to viewers about President Donald Trump, Cumming said during the show’s panel at the Television Critics Association on Saturday.
“I think it’s a secret code about saying no to Trump,” Cumming said, which prompted a burst of laughter in the room. “Just say no.”

The series (which is based on a James Patterson novel) follows Cumming’s character, Dr. Dylan Reinhart, a former CIA operative who is lured back to his old life when the NYPD seeks his help to stop a serial killer. Reinhart is an author and university professor living a quiet life teaching psychopathic behavior and who has promised his husband Andy (Daniel Ings) he’d steer clear of a dangerous life. But when tenacious NYPD detective Lizzie Needham (Bojana Novakovic) appeals to him to help her catch a serial murderer who is using Dylan’s first book as a tutorial, he is compelled to come out of retirement.
The series also stars Naveen Andrews and Sharon Leal as integral members of the crime-solving team.
