Alex Trebek thinks a certain beloved sitcom star should take his place hosting 'Jeopardy' when he retires
Jeopardy host Alex Trebek regularly tosses out one-liners while hosting the long-running quiz show.
And he offered a punchline in person this week at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, when he was asked about who should replace him on the show when he leaves.
“It’s probably going to be a woman, somebody younger, somebody bright, somebody personable, somebody with a great sense of humor, so I nominated Betty White,” Trebek cracked during an appearance at the nonprofit community and cultural center,
The Canadian-born game show host is 78, while White, an iconic star of The Golden Girls, celebrated her 97th birthday on Jan. 17.
White has hosted everything from the annual broadcast of the Tournament of Roses Parade and her own talk show to yes, game shows, in her six-decades-long career, but of course she has no reason to go back to doing that at this point.
Trebek has been the face of the trivia show since the modern version of it first aired in 1984. Last year, he took a medical leave following surgery for blood clots on the brain caused by a fall, and later suggested that he would be interested in retiring soon. Sony Pictures Television announced in November 2018 that Trebek had signed on to host Jeopardy through its 2021-2022 season.
Fans of The Golden Girls will recall that Trebek and White, playing Rose Nylund, appeared on a faux episode of Jeopardy together in February 1992, when Bea Arthur’s brainy character, Dorothy Zbornak, dreamed that she was on the game show, playing against the naive Rose and the women’s dimwitted neighbor.
Trebek offered a few suggestions on others who could replace him: CNN’s Laura Coates, TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz and L.A. Kings announcer Alex Faust.
But his first idea was pretty perfect.
