Alyson Hannigan Has a Clever Idea for a “How I Met Your Mother” Spinoff (Exclusive)
Hannigan wants her on-screen husband Marshall Eriksen to tell the story of how Ted Mosby meets the "mother"
Alyson Hannigan might not have watched the How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Father, but she has another idea for a reboot of the beloved sitcom.
Speaking to PEOPLE exclusively in partnership with Kevin's Natural Foods, Hannigan, 50, says that she envisions a different kind of show where her on-screen husband Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) tells the story of how Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) meets the mysterious "mother," instead of Ted himself.
"It's like, ‘No, no, no, no kids. That's not how it happened,' " she tells PEOPLE. "And then it starts out with, ‘We were a lot older, first of all ...’ and then we can just do the show again."

The nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother, which ran from 2005 to 2014, follow Ted telling the story of how he met the mother of his children through flashbacks narrated by Bob Saget. Hannigan adds that since "everybody tells the story differently," it would be worth getting to experience "Marshall storytelling," recounting the events that fans know and love.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Hannigan tells PEOPLE about not watching the recent spinoff, How I Met Your Father. Her HIMYM costar Cobie Smulders had appeared on the show, and shared pictures from the set, which made Hannigan's "heart hurt."
Neil Patrick Harris, who portrayed Barney Stinson in the original series, was also a guest star in the show's second season.
Hannigan's husband Alexis Denisof had a cameo on HIMYF too, reprising his role from HIMYM as anchor Sandy Rivers. "I should have probably watched that episode," the actress jokes, though adds, "I just couldn't. It just made me sad because I'm like, oh, that's the same set."
How I Met Your Father, starring Hilary Duff and narrated by Kim Cattrall, aired for two seasons on Hulu and ended in 2023 without revealing the father's identity.
