Amber Heard's Close Friend Opens Up About Johnny Depp Divorce: 'People Are Rarely Bad People'
iO Tillett Wright, a close friend of Amber Heard's who was named in the actress' abuse claim, is opening up about living with Heard and Johnny Depp as the couple's relationship turned ugly.
The 31-year-old gay rights activist and co-host of MTV show Suspect told The Times of London's Sunday Times magazine that while Heard, 30, is still one of his "best friends," he's cut ties with Depp because he feels the actor has been unapologetic about his behavior, both publicly and privately. However, Wright says he holds no ill will towards Depp.
"It's a tough thing. My attitude about that is the same as the attitude I have about my parents. People are very rarely bad people," Wright said. "People have things that happen to them and people have pain they are trying to get around."
He continued, "Everyone is trying to dance with their pain and sometimes it's who do you stab in the process? It's what you do about having stabbed them that's the delineation between people you can have in you life and people you can't."
Wright lived with the couple for a year before they got married in 2015. He credits them with saving his life when he decided to go to New York.
"They saved my life. One hundred percent," he said of the couple, revealing they got him on plane back to L.A. after telling him to call them if he ever needed anything.
The activist says Depp's generosity did not end there. The actor once offered to help Wright financially, but he rejected the offer, fearing that it would poison their friendship.
However, after Heard and Depp's split, Wright has clearly stayed close to the actress.
Heard was awarded $7 million in a settlement, but donated the money to the ACLU to fight domestic violence and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and Wright says she actually losing money from the split.

According to court papers that Heard filed in May asking for a restraining order, the court papers stated that Depp made her call Wright. While on the call, the court papers claimed Johnny then "ripped the cell phone from my hand and began screaming profanities and insults at iO."
"I heard iO yell at me to get out of the house," the court papers stated. "Johnny then grabbed the cell phone, wound up his arm like a baseball pitcher and threw the cell phone at me striking my cheek and eye with great force."
"I immediately covered my face and was crying because of the pain resulting from the phone hitting me. Johnny charged at me, insisting on seeing my face. He taunted me, challenged whether or not the cell phone actually hit me. He then forcibly pulled back my hair as I attempted to stand up from the sofa. I then yelled out 'Call 911' hoping it would be heard by iO who was still on the phone. Johnny continued screaming at me, pulling my hair, striking me and violently grabbing my face," the documents said.
A judge granted Heard a temporary restraining order against Depp. However he was never charged with any crime relating to abuse. At the time, his legal team said Heard was motivated by financial gain to make the abuse claims during their then-pending divorce.
In a joint statement released after the two settled their divorce, Heard and Depp said: "Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm."
