'American Crime Story' Has Found Their Matt Drudge
“American Crime Story” is coming back for a new season. Until recently not much was known about what season three of the hit show. Creators Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy announced that the new season of the show would be about the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. Yes, that little scandal that rocked the White House in the 90s. the season will officially be called “American Crime Story: Impeachment” the cast list has slowly been rolling out. When the show was announced it was also announced that Lewinsky would be played by Beanie Feldstein of “Booksmart” fame.
It was also announced that Clinton would be played by Clive Owen and Sarah Paulson was cast as Linda Tripp, the U.S. Civil Servant who recorded Lewinsky’s private phone calls about her relationship with Clinton. Falchuk and Murphy normally cast the same actors in their anthology series so it would be interesting to see who gets cast next. In the past they have cast Selma Blair, Sterling K. Brown, and Darren Criss. It will be exciting to see who makes a comeback.
The latest casting news is Billy Eichner of “American Story fame”. Eichner has been cast as Matt Drudge, the famed journalist who was the first to report on the affair between Lewinsky and Clinton. Drudge was a blogger on his site “The Drudge Report” that gained significant notoriety for breaking news on Clinton’s scandal. This skyrocketed Drudge's career. Casting Eichner means that there will be a significant focus on Drudge and his movements during this time. He was also responsible for leaking a bit of information about who had the actual Clinton story and was ready to break it.
The script for the show is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book “A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President.” Toobin’s book was released in 1999. It gave a detailed account of the affair between the President at the time and a White House intern. The best-selling author’s book strived to tell the whole truth of what truly went down behind those closed doors. This isn’t the first time or the last that the scandal has been looked at. In 2019, A&E had a six-part series titled “The Clinton Affair”.
“American Crime Story: Impeachment” is set to air Sept 27. 2020 on FX. It is being written by playwright Sarah Burgess who is also serving as Executive Producer along side Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall, and Sarah Paulson. Even Lewinsky is on board after Murphy convinced her to tell her story her way. “I told her, ‘Nobody should tell your story but you,’ if you want to produce it with me, I would love that.” She agreed. Who else can’t wait to dig back into this scandal?
