Andrew Garfield Changes His Stance on Becoming a Father: ‘There’s a Heavy Burden There'
Andrew Garfield is changing his tune about fatherhood. And before anyone gets their panties in a twist about his supposed waffling, we’d like to remind the ladies and gentlemen of the parenthood jury that it’s OK to change your mind. The actor plays a dad in his new movie, We Live in Time, but he told Esquire he’s not sure he wants life to imitate art.
“I’m already a tired guy. I don’t want to be a tired dad,” he said, reflecting on turning 41 and how hard it was to play a fictional dad.

He also acknowledged that welcoming a baby is a huge deal. “Particularly bringing new life into the context of my [famous] life,” he said. “There’s a heavy burden there.”
The comments are in stark contrast to those he made to GQ in 2022. At the time, the Spiderman star was approaching 40 and was feeling “guilty” for not having kids yet.
“The good news is, all my high school friends, we’re all celebrating [turning 40] together,” he said. “But it’s interesting – I always thought I would be the first to have kids and settle down, and they’re all shacked up and a couple of kids deep, for the most part.”
He was trying to “release himself” from any “societal obligation” to have a kid by the time he reached the big 4-0 while ultimately acknowledging it’s easier for him as a man to have a child later in life.
“It’s more about accepting a different path than what was kind of expected of me from birth, like ‘By this time you will have done this, and you will have at least one child,’ that kind of thing,” Garfield said. “I think I have some guilt around that.”
Three years earlier, in 2019, Garfield gushed over his desire to be a dad. During a Q&A with IMDb, a fan asked the actor what his dream role would be, per People.
“This is such a cheesy response: to be a father,” he reportedly said with a smile. “My dream role is to be a father to a child, in real life not just in fictional films.”
But his dreams are allowed to change, and there is nothing wrong with being a childless cat man. He can still live a wholly fulfilling and meaningful life. No matter what a certain vice presidential candidate might think.
Before you go, here are other celebrities doing just fine without kids.
