Andy Serkis Teases Cameos Galore in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum may be awash with classic characters from The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
That’s what the film’s director Andy Serkis is saying about his upcoming Gollum spinoff. Speaking at ACE Superhero Comic Con 2024, as first reported by Popverse, Serkis teased "there may be characters that we recognize" in The Hunt for Gollum.
"It’s going to very much be the world of Middle-earth according to Gollum’s experience of it," Serkis continued. "It is so early, it would be unfair to commit to anything at this point. But I will say that it will be a deep dive where we investigate Gollum’s character. There may be characters that we recognize that might be coming back. I’m not going to say who."
Serkis isn’t lying when he says it’s still early days for the film. The story hasn’t been written yet, so its cast of characters can change. In fact, The Hunt for Gollum is only the working title, meaning there’s every chance it’ll go by a different name when it nears release.
So, who could show up in The Hunt for Gollum? Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen told GQ “I would only do it if I was right for the character,” while Ian McKellen will return as Gandalf on this one condition.
Right now, Serkis and Peter Jackson, who’s helping him develop The Hunt for Gollum, are focusing on filling out the Gollum mythos. "We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films," Jackson told Deadline in May. "It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from [original author J.R.R. Tolkien]."
