Anthony Bourdain leaves $1.2M estate to his 11-year-old daughter, according to reports
Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain left his $1.2 million estate to his 11-year-old daughter, Ariane, according to reports.
Both the New York Daily News and the New York Post cited documents from the Manhattan Surrogate’s Court filed Thursday. Bourdain’s assets included $425,000 in cash and savings, as well as $250,000 in personal property, $500,000 in royalties and residuals, and $35,000 in a brokerage account.
Still, both TMZ and USA Today reported Friday that, according to Bourdain’s will, he had created a trust for undisclosed assets that are not public record. His net worth has been estimated at $6 million, by MSN in 2015, and, more recently, at $16 million by Celebrity Net Worth. In March 2017, he wrote in a piece for Wealthsimple that “reports of my net worth are about 10 times overstated.”
A star in the food world and beyond, Bourdain had written books and worked on numerous shows and documentaries, after coming to prominence with his popular book, Kitchen Confidential, in 2000. He was 44 at the time, and had always lived paycheck to paycheck, he said in a 2017 interview.
Bourdain, who died by suicide on June 8, named his estranged wife (and Ariane’s mother) Ottavia Busia-Bourdain, executor of his estate. He also gave her his “personal and household effects,” to “dispose of in accordance with what [she] believes to have been my wishes.” Those items include the frequent flier miles he earned traveling around the world for his reality shows.
According to the Daily News, the court will appoint someone to “safeguard” the inheritance as long as Ariane is a minor.
Ariane is Bourdain’s only child. If her father had outlived her, his estate would have been awarded to her nanny, Myra Quizon.
Bourdain and Ariane’s mom, who married in 2007, revealed their amicable separation in September 2016. He began dating actress Asia Argento in early 2017 and publicly supported Argento after she accused Harvey Weinstein of rape.
Last week, celebrity foodies toasted Bourdain on what would have been his 62nd birthday. Audiences also saw the final episode of his CNN show.
