'Star Wars' Video: Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan, The Rematch
In Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace Darth Maul said, “At last we shall reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we shall have revenge.” Well, that didn’t quite work out, did it? At least not then, and certainly not because of the tattooed Sith Lord. Sure, Maul killed the preachy Qui-Gon Jinn, but he in turn got cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi.
In last week’s episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, however, it was revealed that Maul survived the aforementioned vivisection, though he was left a broken shell of a Sith, incoherently muttering nonsense to himself from deep within a cave on junk planet Lotho Minor. It may have been disappointing for you Maul fans out there to see just how far he had fallen.
Well, your disappointment is going to be very short-lived because in this Friday’s season-ender, “Revenge,” Maul regains his wits, his legs, and his anti-Jedi bloodlust. It all culminates in a rematch with Obi-Wan Kenobi for the ages, a “Duel of the Fates: Part II” if you will. Whereas in Episode I Maul was basically just a blunt instrument deployed by Darth Sidious to do his bidding, this time he’s truly fueled by hate. And, by the Force, if that doesn’t make him a more formidable opponent. To get you ready for this Friday’s EW.com Live Chat with Maul and Obi-Wan’s voice actors, Sam Witwer and James Arnold Taylor, we’ve got an exclusive clip of just what happens when they lock lightsabers once again. Check it out — and pick a side in on our poll — after the jump.
I don’t know about you, but it’s kind of hard not to root for Maul, isn’t it? I mean, he’s a champion for all the characters in pop culture who’ve been cut in half without hope of payback: Tony Goldwyn in Ghost, Robert Shaw’s Quint in Jaws, Elevator Girl on American Horror Story. But as the galaxy is still ruled by a democracy, albeit an increasingly shaky one at the time of the Clone Wars, we need to put this to a vote.
You’ve picked your side, now who do you think will win? Don’t just assume it’s gotta be Obi-Wan because of his presence in Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope…
And be sure to join us this Friday starting at 7:40 p.m. ET/4:40 p.m. PT for our live chat with Sam Witwer and James Arnold Taylor. They’ll be trading barbs during our chat as their characters are trading blows on screen, so get your questions ready! Until then, get caught up with our recap of the episode that brought Maul back to that galaxy far, far away.
