‘Arcane’ Season 2 Trailer: Animated Series Concludes the Vi and Jinx Storyline

Netflix dropped the trailer for Season 2 of its Emmy-winning “Arcane” adult animated series (streaming in November). The trailer also contains “Paint The Town Blue,” the first single from Ashnikko, which will appear on the Season 2 soundtrack.

Based on Riot’s popular “League of Legends” multi-player battle game, Season 2 will complete the origin story of rival sisters Jinx (Ella Purnell) — aka Powder — and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld), both “League of Legends” champs, who fight on opposite sides of a war between the utopian city Piltover and its oppressed underbelly Zaun.

Created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, the steampunk “Arcane” series became the most acclaimed animated video game adaptation ever. After discerning what made the game and characters so popular, they set out to make a distinctive dystopian story around Jinx and Vi. But they needed a fresh visual style, so they studied “Game of Thrones” and “Peaky Blinders.”

Most importantly, they collaborated with Paris-based Fortiche Animation, which provided an eye-popping, illustrative style after distinguishing itself with Riot game cinematics and music videos, specializing in an assortment of 2D effects.

Piltover’s bright and mechanical Art Deco look stood in sharp contrast with Zaun’s dark, phosphorescent vibe. Fortiche delivered a mix of finely textured 3D characters and digitally hand-painted backgrounds. Meanwhile, the animation team continued pushing their 2D effects during fight sequences and drew on a range of different animation styles.

One of the highlights was conveying Jinx’s manic state of mind through glitching and film scratches, which were then scanned into the computer. It was as though she were scribbling on the actual film. This will definitely come to a head in Season 2.

However, even though we will see the last of “Arcane,” Linke promises more stories to come from the Runeterra planet, from where most of the “League of Legends” lore hails, in partnership with Fortiche.
