Arnaud Desplechin’s ‘My Golden Years’ Lands In Directors’ Fortnight – Cannes
Cannes Film Festival watchers reacted with dismay yesterday at the exclusion of Arnaud Desplechin’s Trois Souvenirs De Ma Jeunesse from the Official Selection. But fans of the Jimmy P, Un Conte De No?l, and Rois Et Reine helmer can now take solace that his latest film will play in Directors’ Fortnight next month. Going by the English title My Golden Years, it’s set to screen on May 15.
Billed as an excruciating and glowing quest for time and lost loves, the drama stars Mathieu Amalric, Quentin Dolmaire and Lou Roy-Lecollinet. Artistic director of the Fortnight, Edouard Waintrop, says My Golden Years may be Desplechin’s “best and most moving film” (French trailer below).
Cannes fest chief Thierry Frémaux unveiled the Official Selection on Thursday in Paris and was immediately queried as to why Desplechin’s widely expected film didn’t make the Competition cut. He said he was indeed a fan, but cited an abundance of French films already in the section. There are four in the race for the Palme d’Or and a fifth opening out of competition.
Desplechin scripted My Golden Years with Julie Peyr. Jean Labadie’s Le Pacte is releasing the Why Not Productions pic in France on May 20; Wild Bunch has sales. Here’s the trailer (sorry, no subtitles):
