Association of Motion Picture Sound nominations include ‘The Substance’ and ‘A Complete Unknown’
The 12th annual Association of Motion Picture Sound Awards has announced its nominations for the Excellence in Sound for a Feature Film category, and three of this year’s predicted Best Sound Oscar nominees received bids: A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked. Two other Oscar frontrunners, Gladiator II and Emilia Pérez, were passed over in favor of a pair of AMPS nominees that didn’t even make the Oscar shortlist: Conclave and The Substance.
More AMPS categories will be announced in the coming weeks. Created in 1989, the Association of Motion Picture Sound has roughly 600 members and is based in the United Kingdom. From their website, “Our highly skilled members include Production Sound Mixers, Sound Designers, Supervising Sound Editors, Sound Editors, Re-recording Mixers, Music Mixers, Music Editors, Boom Operators, Sound Assistants, Foley Artists, and many more.”

The prior 11 AMPS winners for Excellence in Sound for a Feature Film are Gravity (2013), Whiplash (2014), The Martian (2015), Arrival (2016), Baby Driver (2017), Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), 1917 (2019), Sound of Metal (2020), Dune (2021), All Quiet On The Western Front (2022), and The Zone of Interest (2023). All of these movies were nominated at the Oscars for sound, and several of them won, including The Zone of Interest last year. (Note that the current Best Sound Oscar category was created in 2020 and combines the prior achievements of Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.)

Voting for the top movie award will run from Jan. 11 to Jan. 21, and the winner will be announced on Jan. 23.
