Swedish DJ Tim Bergling, popularly known as Avicii, continues to be remembered years after his untimely death in 2018. The musician’s tragic passing is now back in the spotlight. The new documentary, Avicii – I’m Tim, has made devastating revelations about his final days. The documentary is directed by Henrik Burman and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

The Grammy-nominated musician’s massive hits “Wake Me Up” and “Waiting for Love” are still loved by fans and are among popular club anthems. Avicii – I’m Tim dives into the late DJ’s music legacy and features “never-before-seen tour footage and behind-the-scenes glimpses of his creative process.” It also includes interviews with his friends and family.

During his successful music career, the DJ unfortunately struggled with mental health and alcohol and drug usage, reported The Independent. Avicii tragically died by suicide at the age of 28 in Oman. In the documentary, Avicii admitted that he suffered from anxiety and that he was “killing himself” with his relentless touring, LADbible notes.

What does the Avicii documentary reveal about the Swedish DJ’s death?

Per Mail Online, Avicii’s good friend and the managing partner of a Las Vegas nightclub, Jesse Waits, told the filmmakers that he realized that the artist was taking painkillers as he “grew up with [a] family that did drugs.” Waits added that during a dinner, Avicii’s “eyes were wide open like a zombie, he was not there.” He further added that the DJ’s “demeanor changed and his eyes dilated.”

Waits noted that the constant usage of pills changes how one would “act and feel.” It becomes a repetitive cycle as they “wake up feeling like s*** and have to have another one to feel good.” He added that, for Avicii, “it was to suppress his anxiety but it just created more anxiety.”

The documentary’s global release is yet to be announced.
