‘Awards Magnet’: ‘Anora’s’ big weekend and 2025 BAFTA Awards winner predictions
How did Anora pull off its guild twofer? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng discuss Anora‘s winning weekend and make BAFTA predictions with Gold Derby editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum.
Anora had a stellar Saturday, bagging the first two industry awards of the season — and two big ones at that: the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Picture and the Directors Guild of America Award for Sean Baker. The awards also came 24 hours after the film won Best Picture and nothing else at the delayed Critics Choice Awards. The PGA and DGA victories were not forecasted in the odds, though PGA was less of a surprise, but now as a result, the film has reclaimed the top spot in the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar odds. PGA and DGA have great track records with the Oscars — the former has not aligned with Best Picture 10 times in 35 years and the latter has not matched eight times in 76 years — but why did so few see this double coming? Was Anora‘s Golden Globe shutout a blessing in disguise? And can former Best Director frontrunner Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) recover at the BAFTAs?

SEE Awards Magnet: Has Karla Sofía Gascón torpedoed Emilia Pérez‘s Oscar hopes?
The Brutalist is predicted to win Best Picture and Best Director at the BAFTAs, but don’t be surprised if Anora overtakes it in the odds in both categories before Sunday. Adding another wrinkle is Conclave, which leads with 12 nominations, and its Oscar-snubbed director, Edward Berger, is nominated and has won before for All Quiet on the Western Front, for which he was also Oscar-snubbed. And in the first industry awards show with acting categories, will Oscar frontrunners Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Demi Moore (The Substance), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), and Zoe Salda?a (Emilia Pérez) continue their win streaks? If Anora is an industry fave, can Mikey Madison regain momentum from Moore?
