Awards Magnet: Breaking down the 2025 Golden Globe nominations snubs and surprises
Where in the world is Denis Villeneuve? And Danielle Deadwyler? And Marianne Jean-Baptiste? How big of a boost did “Emilia Pérez” get? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng dissect the 2025 Golden Globe nominations in this episode of Awards Magnet.
Several films underperformed in Monday’s nominations, most notably “Dune: Part Two,” which earned just two bids for Best Drama Film and Best Original Score. Villeneuve, who was nominated by the Globes three years ago for the first “Dune,” was surprisingly MIA in Best Director, which featured two female nominees in “The Substance’s” Coralie Fargeat and “All We Imagine as Light’s” Payal Kapadia. What gives? At least the film made the top category, unlike “Sing Sing.” The A24 drama only received one bid for Colman Domingo, missing Best Drama Film and Best Supporting Actor for Clarence Maclin, two widely predicted nominations. The snubs, combined with those of Deadwyler and Jean-Baptiste, are not great optics for the Globes, but are there logical reasons for why they failed to materialize?

On the flip side, Globe voters sung the praises of “Emilia Pérez,” showering the musical with 10 nominations. That breaks “Barbie’s” and “Cabaret’s” record of the most nominations for a comedy/musical film. The nominations come two days after “Emilia Pérez” swept the European Film Awards, winning all five of its categories. While the film remains divisive with audiences, it’s clear that the industry — which the Globes is not — and voting bodies, especially international ones — which the Globes is — can’t get enough of it. But can it win Best Comedy/Musical Film in a stacked lineup that includes five-time nominees “Anora,” and “The Substance,” and four-time nominees “Challengers,” “A Real Pain,” and “Wicked”?
Elsewhere, we discuss the TV nominations, where “The Bear” rebounded with a leading five bids after only scoring one last week at the Critics Choice Awards.
