‘Awards Magnet’ live recap show: Breaking down the 2025 Oscar nominations snubs and surprises
I’m Still Here in Best Picture! Edward Berger snubbed again! Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng went live following Thursday’s Oscar nominations to discuss all the snubs and surprises, and who has the edge now to win.
The day’s biggest shocker came right at the very end when I’m Still Here was revealed to be one of the 10 Best Picture nominees. It was in 13th place in the odds, two spots below the next slightly surprising nominee Nickel Boys. Even with all the debate over the final Best Actress spot between star Fernanda Torres and Hard Truths‘ Marianne Jean-Baptiste, very few seriously considered I’m Still Here as a Best Picture threat. So how did it get in? Torres’ Golden Globe win certainly helped, as does having master campaigner Sony Pictures Classics as your studio. I’m Still Here getting nominated alongside Emilia Pérez, which leads with 13 bids, made them the 10th and 11th non-English language films to be nominated for both Best Picture and Best International Feature Film in the same year, a reminder of the steady strength of international voters ever since the Academy made an aggressive push to diversify its ranks following #OscarsSoWhite a decade ago.

SEE Awards Magnet: Final 2025 Oscar nominations predictions
One the other end of the spectrum, Conclave helmer Berger was left off the Best Director lineup, two years after the BAFTA champ was snubbed for All Quiet on the Western Front, making him, not James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), the Directors Guild of America Award nominee who was snubbed. DGA and the Oscar directing lineup have not matched in 15 years.
Similarly, Jamie Lee Curtis hit two industry precursors, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and BAFTA, for her supporting turn in The Last Showgirl but failed to earn an afterglow nomination, two years after her win for Everything Everywhere All at Once. The supporting categories favor Best Picture coattails, and all five Best Supporting Actress nominees are in Best Picture nominees. The Last Showgirl was always just an acting play for Curtis and Golden Globe and SAG nominee Pamela Anderson. Curtis missed in favor of Monica Barbaro, who was seventh in the odds and only had SAG as her precursor nomination, but A Complete Unknown has been on the upswing since opening on Christmas, showing up at all the major guilds and BAFTA en route to eight Oscar nominations.
