Awkwafina quits Twitter after addressing 'linguistic acculturation' of Black culture
Comedian Awkwafina is quitting Twitter after addressing criticism she's faced for using AAVE (African American Vernacular English) throughout her career.
The actress has faced backlash on social media for appropriating Black culture and using a "blaccent" during her early rap career and for her role as Peik Lin in "Crazy Rich Asians." She was asked about the negative feedback in a September interview with Reuters and replied she was "open to the conversation." at the time.
On Saturday she opened the conversation herself with a message on Twitter acknowledging how Black culture has been "stolen" and "exploited" throughout history, and added that as an immigrant she carved much of her identity from her environment and hip-hop.
"In life, linguistic acculturation, immigrant acculturation and the inevitable passage of globalized internet slang all play a factor in the fine line between offense and pop culture," she wrote. "I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE. "
E. Patrick Johnson, dean of Northwestern's School of Communication, told USA TODAY in June appropriation is inevitable and it's "disheartening" when culture is "commodified without any acknowledgment of remuneration."

The 33-year-old's message wasn't well-received on Twitter, despite her statement stating it was never her "nature" to "mock" or "belittle" others.
"All these words and not one apology. Awkwafina could have just said: 'You were right. I did use a blaccent to make a name for myself and that was wrong. I wholeheartedly apologize, and I'll do better from now on'," writer Britni Danielle wrote.
"All Boys Aren't Blue" author George M. Johnson replied to her post with a photo of different apology phrases writing, "Since you wasted all those words to say nothing."
