Ayesha Curry recalls intrusive encounter with husband Steph's fan while she was breastfeeding
Ayesha Curry has been by husband Stephen Curry’s side as he rose to stardom in the NBA, but she still gets caught off-guard by the aggressiveness of some of his fans.
On Monday’s big Red Table Talk return, Curry joined Jada Pinkett Smith and company at the table for a discussion, including building her own empire as a cook to be more than than just a basketball wife and dealing with Steph’s groupies. When the discussion turned to coping with anxiety, Curry revealed that she has it too, and takes medicine for it. She recalled an incident — during which her husband’s fan invaded her space — which was triggering.
Curry told the story of a shopping trip with the Golden State Warriors player when their now 6-year-old daughter Riley was an infant. She was breastfeeding the baby in the backseat of the car when Steph, who was outside of the vehicle, was approached by overzealous fans.
“This group of people come over and they’re trying to ask Stephen for pictures and autographs,” she recalled. “The woman opens the car door, sticks her body in the car and is like, ‘Oh, let me see...’” the baby.
While she replied, “‘No, get out of the car,’” the woman was shameless about it, replying, “‘Oh, honey, you know what you signed up for.’”
Curry said that incident “stuck with me for a long time. Because, no, I didn’t, and I do think I deserve some type of personal space.”
The Covergirl said that’s where anxiety “stems from for me.” However, she added that “open communication” and “putting your feelings” out there help her combat it instead of trying to hide it.
Curry talked about groupies, too — who are a whole other breed from aggressive fans. While she and her husband, whom she married in 2011 are solid, she still finds herself getting worked up in situations with overtly lecherous women.
“Stephen is very nice by nature and he’s very talkative,” Curry said. “Everything is very friendly — sometimes to the point where I’m like: OK... I’ll go insert myself,” admitting, “I’m Ok with it now.”
However, she’s well aware that “the ladies will always be lurking and hoping for their moment” and “I honestly hate it,” she freely admitted. “It irks my nerves... There have been a couple times when I wanted to punch somebody in the face for sure.” But not her husband. “Never him — it’s always the other person.”
She said that because Steph is such a “nice human being,” sometimes he’s unaware of red flag moments. “He can’t see it coming,” she said, but “I see it a mile away.”
Curry also admitted that the constant attention paid to her husband by women has at times has made her insecure,
“There are all these women throwing themselves” at him, but in “the past 10 years, I don’t have any of that,” she said. “I have zero male attention. I begin to internalize it is something wrong with me?”
