Baby Bump Dressing on Venice Film Festival Red Carpets: Natalie Portman, Kate Hudson and More Glamorous Maternity Inspiration

Stars including Uma Thurman and Natalie Portman have brought their best maternity style to the Venice Film Festival over the years, displaying their baby bumps on the red carpet. One A-lister in particular — Kate Hudson — famously made a fashion statement by baring her growing belly in a Chanel crop top, a trend that’s since been popularized by stars like Rihanna, Ciara and Adriana Lima.

Thurman was pregnant with her son Levon at the premiere of “Training Day” during the 2001 Venice Film Festival. The “Kill Bill” actress embraced the era’s minimalist trends, selecting a black scoop-neck midi dress, open-toe mules and dainty jewelry. She was accompanied by her then-husband, actor Ethan Hawke, with whom she also shares a daughter, Maya, born in 1998.

2003: Kate Hudson

Hudson helped pioneer a major red carpet maternity trend in 2003 by fully baring her baby bump — a look that stars like Adriana Lima, Rihanna and Ciara have since tried out.

To attend the premiere of “Le Divorce,” the actress selected a lilac two-piece Chanel ensemble consisting of a halter top and matching maxiskirt, which both featured feathered hemlines and crystallized embroidery. Hudson’s sheer look was based on a design from the French label’s spring 2003 haute couture collection.

At the time, the “Almost Famous” star was pregnant with her son Ryder Robinson, who she shares with ex-husband, musician Chris Robinson.

2007: Helena Bonham Carter

While pregnant with her daughter Nell, Helena Bonham Carter attended the Venice Film Festival in a blue-violet off-the-shoulder midi dress featuring a babydoll silhouette. The actress accessorized her taffeta frock with sheer tights, crossover peep-toe pumps and diamond jewelry, completing her look with a bedazzled clutch and oversize shades.

Nell is Bonham Carter’s second child with her former partner, director Tim Burton. They also share a son, Billy, who was born in 2003.

2014: Milla Jovovich

Milla Jovovich put a maternity spin on the classic minidress at the premiere of “Cymbeline,” selecting a white v-neck shift that highlighted her growing baby bump. The actress and former model accessorized with striped pumps, gold statement earrings and a crystallized envelope clutch.

On the red carpet, Jovovich was pregnant with her second daughter, Dashiel Edan. The “Fifth Element” star and her husband, director Paul W. S. Anderson, also have a daughter, Ever, who they welcomed in 2007.

2016: Natalie Portman

Portman channeled Greek goddess glamour in a draped one-shoulder dress by Dior. At the premiere of “Planetarium,” the actress was expecting her daughter, Amalia, Portman’s second child with ex-husband, choreographer Benjamin Millepied. The couple also welcomed a son, Aleph, in 2011.
