Monday’s episode starts out with a flash-forward to Devin getting emotional in a chat with Jesse and saying, “I don’t feel like I’m the one.” He knocks on Jenn’s hotel room door and mutters, “This is probably the end for me”… but we’ll have to wait to see how that turns out, because we go back to the start of fantasy suites week, with Jenn arriving in sunny Hawaii and doing a quick check-in with Bachelor success story Molly Mesnick about her final three guys: Devin, Jonathon and Marcus. (No, Molly wasn’t her Bachelor’s final choice, but hey, they’re still together, so it counts!)
Jenn says it’s been a slow burn with Jonathon so far, and she wants him to let his guard down this week. With Marcus, he’s been reliable throughout this process, but she’d like to see him open up more as well. As for Devin, he really gets her, Jenn says, and he’s already said he’s in love with her. But she’s worried that she’ll “self-sabotage” with him since she’s never been loved like that before, and Molly has to convince her that she deserves a man who really loves her. Yes you do, Jenn! Please hear that — and don’t settle for another Sam M. type.
Up first is Devin, and he’s still waiting to hear Jenn reciprocate his declaration of love. They go on a helicopter ride over the Hawaiian coast and land at a picturesque waterfall, popping a bottle of Champagne. He’s looking forward to their future together in the real world, and he drops the L-word again, but she’s not ready to say it back. “I’m on the way there,” she reassures him, and he tells her, “You’re worth the wait” — but he’s clearly disappointed.
At dinner, Devin tells Jenn he’s very confident in his feelings for her, and he’s ready to get engaged. He even hints that he hasn’t heard much back from her, but all she can say is she’s “thankful” for him. They open the fantasy suite card, and they’re both in, cracking open more Champagne and leaving the cameras outside. The next morning, Jenn declares that Devin is “better than Pete Davidson… in every way.” (Oh my!) They giggle over breakfast together, and she tells him she can see a future with him. But she’s still not ready to say she loves him… and that makes Devin nervous.
Jonathon is next, and he knows he needs to go deeper with Jenn this week. (Side note: Did we know his name is Jonathon Johnson?!?) They go shopping together, trying some donuts — even though he doesn’t like sweets — and browsing for jewelry. Then they have a picnic by another beautiful Hawaiian waterfall, and she tells him she doesn’t want him to be afraid to open up. But talking about opening up is not the same as opening up, you know. Just do it already!
Finally, at dinner, Jenn shares her memories of growing up in a white suburb and avoiding bringing Vietnamese food to school so she could fit in. (Aw!) Jonathon was raised in a mixed-race family, and he sweetly offers to learn to speak Vietnamese to help him fit in with Jenn’s family. They both say yes to the fantasy suite, and Jenn can see spending the rest of her life with him. In the morning, she reports, “we went to bed smiling,” and “we woke up smiling.” But then we check in with Devin, who’s pacing anxiously and says he’ll be really hurt if Jenn says “I love you” to someone else. That’s some ominous foreshadowing, isn’t it?
That leaves Marcus, who admits Jenn is ahead of him in the feelings department as he hits golf balls with Jesse. (Devin also got to play golf with Jesse earlier. Does Jonathon not play?) Marcus isn’t in love with Jenn yet, he admits, and he wouldn’t feel right proposing at this point. He and Jenn go on a sunset boat ride and go snorkeling with manta rays, and it’s all very romantic — except it feels like Jenn is a little too confident in what she has with Marcus.
She’s ready to tell him she loves him, but at dinner, Marcus tells her the last rose ceremony made him nervous because he didn’t get the first rose (???). He’s “unsure,” he confesses, and “you deserve someone who is sure about you.” Jenn’s smile fades, and she tells him she is in love with him — and all he can do is nod silently. “You make me feel amazing” is the best he can do, and he promises to keep trying, but “I’m not there yet.” Ouch. They do go to the fantasy suite and spend the night together, but even though he says their night was special, he’s not ready to drop the L-bomb yet. As for Jenn, she hopes he can say he loves her by the end of the week. Um, the clock is ticking!
Meanwhile, Devin is spiraling, and we see him spilling out his insecurities to Jesse. He gets emotional (“I don’t feel wanted. I don’t feel needed”), and we watch him again go to Jenn’s door, declaring: “I can’t do it anymore.” In the preview for tomorrow’s “Men Tell All” episode, Devin tells Jenn, “I’ve risked everything for you,” and she winds up in tears. Then in next week’s finale, Jenn’s family warns her about her history of choosing emotionally unavailable men (ding ding!), and we see her telling someone, “I can’t let you propose to me.” (Looks like a tall guy. Devin?) She also makes a big decision and knocks on someone’s hotel room door as Jesse tells us, “No Bachelorette has ever ended her journey like this.”
Who do you think Jenn will hand her final rose to? And who do you think should get it? We want to hear from you, Bachelor Nation: Share your thoughts in a comment below!
