'Baywatch' Reboot: Come On In. The Water's Fine (We Hope)

Baywatch is getting rebooted — not as a TV series, but as a full-length major motion picture. We’re not sure how to feel about this.

It’s coming in 2017, with a brand-new cast playing the classic characters and with, reportedly, a more comedic take. The new cast includes Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Mitch, David Hasselhoff’s character. Just announced as the new CJ, Pamela Anderson’s character, is Kelly Rohrbach. She’s mostly made headlines in the past for dating Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as starring in a few indie films. No offense to Ms. Rohrbach, but it seems like a missed opportunity here. We had a perfectly good Kate Upton we could have used!

It’s worth noting that the film will be directed by Seth Gordon of Horrible Bosses, which was actually a pretty funny movie, so maybe we shouldn’t be too quick to judge this project. On the other hand, writing this comedic interpretation are Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the scribes most notably behind slasher flicks like the Friday the 13th reboot and Freddy vs. Jason. (Maybe they’ve had comedy chops all along that they’ve been waiting to let loose.)

There are some other famous cast members involved, including Zac Efron, whose abs we’ll probably see, and Alexandra Daddario of True Detective, as Summer. Here’s hoping we’ll get a Baywatch Cinematic Universe with a Baywatch Nights spinoff featuring Sgt. Ellerbee investigating werewolf murders. But, first, look for Baywatch to hit theaters sometime in 2017.

Here are some other movies we’re tracking that will be coming your way in 2017.
