The Beach Boys is undoubtedly one of the most iconic American bands of all time. Founded in California, they have released 29 full-length albums. Besides gaining critical acclaim, The Beach Boys has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making them commercially successful.

According to Variety, a new documentary titled The Beach Boys will delve into this iconic band’s history and illustrious career. The outlet reports that the documentary will feature unseen band footage and new interviews with members Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, Brian Wilson, and David Marks. In addition, the documentary will show famous faces in music like Don Was, Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle Monáe, and Ryan Tedder.

Directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, The Beach Boys will premiere on Disney+ on May 24, 2024. According to a Disney+ press release, this project is described as, “The Beach Boys is a celebration of the legendary band that revolutionized pop music, and the iconic, harmonious sound they created that personified the California dream, captivating fans for generations and generations to come.”

It continues, “The documentary traces the band from humble family beginnings and features never-before-seen footage and all-new interviews with The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, Bruce Johnston, plus other luminaries in the music business, including Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder, and Don Was.”

When were The Beach Boys formed and what was their debut album?

The Beach Boys were formed in 1961. Their first album, Surfin’ Safari, came out on October 1, 1962, and the lineup consisted of Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and David Marks. The band’s last studio album was titled That’s Why God Made the Radio, which was released on June 5, 2012.

As for the upcoming documentary, Variety reports that the script is written by Mark Monroe. It is produced by Kennedy/Marshall and White Horse Pictures. The Beach Boys’ producers are Marshall, Irving Azoff, Nicholas Ferrall, Jeanne Elfant Festa, and Aly Parker. Aside from them, The Beach Boys documentary boasts a host of executive producers, including Nigel Sinclair, Ben J. Murphy, Cassidy Hartmann, and Glen Zipper, among others.
